For large swathes of English people/media type England >>> Club football.
A bit of a dumb question perhaps, but are there many people who only follow England? Here if I'm talking with someone who likes 'soccer' I often hear that their favorite team is the United States. I can't imagine that being the case there unless it's just with very casual fans.
Not really, there are a few casuals who come out during the WC but generally everyone has a club affiliation but how strong that is varies wildly in my experience.

Why's it such a big deal that he's scored against Lithuania? He's already scored against far better competition in the Premier League. Hope he does well, it would be nice for England to have a semi-likable team.
That's all fair enough. Just going to the Middle East isn't exactly for 'love of the game' reasons. He's getting paid a shit-load and strengthening the sketchy link between Barcelona and Qatar.
Exactly. Only play for one club, probably the best club in the world, and win everything possible at a club and international level. No need for anything else, that's about as perfect a career as you can get.
The annoying thing is that if we win (lol) some idiots will think that's good enough reason to give the job to Carver. If we lose we hand them another three points for their relegation fight, again... Hope it's a 0-0 with no shots on goal.
