It’s a balance isn’t it. You have to judge if any potential additional fee you’re sacrificing is worth it to allow you to move for quickly for any replacement targets. Easy with hindsight, but we’d probably have taken a bit less for Isak if (granted, big if) it had allowed us to get one of our targets from earlier in the window.

Tbf, I think there’s only the clubs that are currently nailing transfers - Brighton, Brentford and Bournemouth - that are really extracting OTT value out of their sales. Liverpool too maybe, at least until very recently. Man Utd often seem to get decent fees in isolation, but generally not really when you look at what they paid for that player in the first place.

As a CB? That kid we got from Barnsley is probably the highest-rated, but he’s at least another two years away. There’s also that kid whose physique and movement resembles Pogba, but again he’s very young.

The one before that was £20m for a player we got for free who played about 5 games for us.

He’s pretty good. Although he’s not currently a particular upgrade on what we have at present, so the suggestion that we’d loan him for a year seems fairly fanciful (unless some kind of Hall-esque obligation). A permanent transfer would certainly be more believable.

Must be disappointing that a club legend is in open civil war with the current captain though? I’d find it really uncomfortable if Shearer was ripping into (our) Bruno and he was biting back.

Every single one of them, bar Bruno, and to a lesser extent Burn, have been dropped at some point. The issue has been that the players that have replaced them generally haven’t made the team any better. At least not consistently anyway. So the issue is not that Howe has ‘favourites’ and refuses to remove them from the team, it’s that he, or probably more specifically the club, have failed to find replacements that are up to standard*. *probably harsh on Thiaw
