Thought at the start of the summer that holding on to our top players was the priority and we’ve done that. Disappointed to lose the promise of Minteh and signings in priority positions have been disappointing so: 4/10

Isak needs to use the ball a bit better. A lot breaking down with him. Tonali has been fantastic so far

Very flat for the most part. Barnes made a difference when he came on. Would have been livid if we’d had that goal disallowed. Looked more shoulder than hand. Still a point’s a point away from home.

They’re far more physical and winning every battle. Being more Newcastle than we are.

On his day, he could be absolutely unplayable. I honestly think that Man City signing a player like Doku was after seeing what ASM did to them in the 3-3 draw at SJP a couple of seasons ago. It was probably the consistency that was the issue for Eddie.

Today was depressing. Gutted that we’ll not be playing in Europe next season but also that reminder of what a closed shop the trophy winners club is. United have been awful in the last couple of years but have still managed to add two trophies. Meanwhile, our wait goes on…

Great effort from the lads tonight. Couldn’t have asked anymore given the current injury list. On VAR - they really need to have the refs mics linked to the PA system like in rugby. The refs there have to talk the decision through with the off-field team and come to a joint decision. In football, it seems like the ref is just being told he’s wrong and needs to reverse the decision. It’s too much pressure on the guy in the middle especially with the players and crowd influencing the outcome.

Almost up there with the “I would love it if we beat them!” moment from Wor Kev

The goal for me was: 1) Need to see from above to make a decision. Ref played on. Fine. 2) Joelinton was challenging and didn’t see anything more. 3) For me the ball goes backwards or at worst sideways from Joelinton. Can’t be offside. I’m aware of my possible bias.

Never too up and never too down. He’s the perfect manager at our crazy, wonderful club ❤️

Loved his performance tonight. Top class.

Didn’t put a foot wrong all night and is obviously a leader on the pitch and in the dressing room. Delighted for him.

Amazing night. Great performance and well deserved result.

Yep - try flipping a coin and see how many consecutive heads or tails you get. Can’t get anywhere near 12 ?

Port Vale away would be nice. Liverpool at Anfield more likely.

Thought he was the one who injected that bit of extra pace and tempo in the second half. Could see on a couple of occasions when he took quick throws that he knew we needed to get the crowd up and get the play moving a bit quicker. Glad he played the extra minutes tonight as he looks very fit.
-
I honestly don’t know what to make of him. Not sure what type of player he is or will be in the long term for us. He did ok tonight but Tonali is miles ahead in terms of technical ability. One to watch develop under Eddie hopefully.

A few beers in and corrected as soon as I’d typed ??

I think this evening was a glimpse of what we’ll see this season with the extra CL games coming up. 5 changes and a couple of the big guns rested. The opening 20 minutes aside, we controlled most of the play but it was fairly edgy with just the one goal lead. The more minutes we get in the legs of Anderson, Longstaff and Barnes the better as they’re going to have a major role this season.

It’s got that horrible feel of a game that could be won by an odd goal by either side.
