In fact, if we signed a 6 and Hall became first choice, we are only an elite RW away from having a very good first and second choice 11: Pope; Trippier Schar Botman Hall; new 6 Bruno Tonali; New RW Isak Gordon Pope; Livramento Lascelles Burn Targett; Longstaff Willock Joelinton; Almiron Wilson Barnes.

Can’t help but feel we will sign a 6 next summer - we’ve got Tripper and after him Livramento at right back, and sooner rather than later Hall will be first choice LB. So we will need another player to sit as we will lose that from the LB spot.

It’s worth noting that we have more points now than we did at the same stage last season. I agree there is more competition this year but that also means the points will be more spread out, so I can’t see us needing more than 70 for a top 5 finish. In terms of signings, it’s quite clear that we overachieved last year/got CL ahead of schedule, and the club are not deviating from their original strategy. we are only 10 games into the season, just calm down and enjoy the ride.

To be fair I think this discussion on Pope has been very respectful and plenty of valid points about his weaknesses - not everything has to be super positive or extremely negative, there is room in between for constructive discussion, although I admit it doesn’t happen often on here

Have to remember though if all those teams continue to do better then some of the points they get will have to come from the teams at the top - it might mean that less points will be enough if all of the top 8/9 are taking points off each other

All fair points, also part of the reason why I think we will still end up signing an out and out 6 long term, so they can form the 3 with the 2 CBs and both full backs push on. Can’t imagine we have signed Hall and Livramento for one of them to play the burn role.

Okay so one attacking contribution means nothing ‘not positive’ can be said? To be clear I’m not having a go at Burn. And I’m not singling him out based on one occasion. I’m saying I think Isaks reaction was based on regular occurrences over time where he has lacked support. I also appreciate if we played Hall/Targett we would lose some defensive steel that Burn brings, but this is the Isak thread and I’m talking about Isaks frustration in the first half today. It’s not like I’ve into the Burn thread calling him shite.

It comes from Burns lack of attacking in general, but in this particular instance there was no overlapping run you would expect from a full back. He wasn’t the only one in this example, but it’s a safe assumption that he would prefer Targett or Hall at LB

There was a point in the first half he came deep, got the ball and charged forward, and was clearly angry that no one had made a run ahead of him. I get the impression he really doesn’t like playing with Burn
