Shearer is set for his return to St James’s

Sep 5 2007

by Luke Edwards, The Journal

THEY once terrorised Premier League defences together at Newcastle and Alan Shearer and Les Ferdinand are set to be reunited as part of the Prince’s Trust Challenge Trophy next month.

Shearer and Ferdinand are ready to star in a charity football game in aid of the Prince’s Trust at Newcastle’s St James’s Park on October 14, alongside a host of other sporting personalities and local celebrities.

The former United strikers have been lined up to play for the Duke of Northumberland’s team, alongside fellow former Magpies Peter Beardsley and Rob Lee. Several former Sunderland players are likely to figure in the Earl of Durham’s team when the full line-ups are revealed this morning.

The football match will be the last fixture in the inaugural year for The Prince’s Trust Challenge Trophy 2007, raising money for disadvantaged young people in the North-East. The Prince’s Trust Challenge Trophy sees the North and South of the region go head-to-head under the colours of the team presidents, His Grace, The Duke of Northumberland who threw down the gauntlet to The Right Honourable, Earl of Durham, Lord Durham at St James’s Park earlier this year.

The events so far have seen teams of sports personalities and stars of stage and screen do battle in top sporting arenas across the region.

A celebrity golf tournament at Slaley Hall saw the Duke’s team pick up the first trophy sponsored by Esh, whilst an all star cricket game held at Durham Riverside last Sunday saw the Earl of Durham’s team win the cricket trophy sponsored by Stratstone.

A celebrity clay shoot will take place on September 24 in Northumberland.

Jonathan Edwards CBE is the overall team coach for “The Duke’s Team” and Steve Cram MBE is the overall team coach for “The Earl of Durham’s Team” across all four Challenge Trophy events.

Duke of Northumberland football team manager Alan Shearer and Earl of Durham Manager Jack Charlton have pulled together two dream teams of the top names in North-East sport to play in the event.

Tickets go on sale on Monday at NUFC Box Office on (0191) 261-1571 or via www.nufc.co.uk priced at £6 for concessions and £15 for access to the bar areas.

Corporate hospitality tickets will be sold on a first come basis by calling Karen Waugh on (0191) 201-8682 at £99 per person. The evening celebration dinner featuring after dinner speakers from the celebrity teams and a football memorabilia auction, is priced at £100 per person.

Redheugh Bridge is closed apparently, just a warning for those planning on driving to the game!

I wondered about that, the very helpful sign at the end of it just says closed Sunday -/10/07.
