STM
I didn't read it but guessed that is what it said. Still as you say, Cisse will play in Mitrovic's absence.
Gallowgate Toon
I really want to see Gini drop back but I just don't trust any of his partners, he'd probably get dragged into more defensive work than necessary. One of Anita/Colback having to deal with Payet is a worry.
Big Geordie
Billy Whitehurst is a crackerjack and genuinely as hard as nails. I remember an interview with Alan Hansen - he was asked about who was the player he hated facing, and he said Billy - he was terrified and I bet he wasn't alone! If anyone gets to a talk-in with John Anderson - ask him about the club's trip to the Caribbean, back in the mid 80's! There's also a belter of a story about him jacking off to a porn film, whilst rooming with someone! Duncan Ferugson as we know, can handle himself. Shearer can too. Ferguson and Shearer were actually really good footballers though. Whitehurst was just a big bastard with two left feet.
TRon
That would suggest Anita's out then based on there being no chance Colback will be dropped. Colback Wijnaldum Sissoko De Jong Thauvin Perez That would be interesting. I'd like to see how Colback copes as a lone defensive midfielder.
The College Dropout
I'd like to know why Colback is undroppable. The silly sod rarely gets sent off or small injuries either.
STM
FWIW, Anita has looked more crucial to McClaren's plans than Colback. I'd wager that McClaren knows Colback can't do the job Anita does, in between the centre backs "making things tick". That's why I can't see either being dropped. Anita is a key man in McClaren's mind and Colback, well that's too good to be true. I actually don't mind Colback but he clearly the odd one out. Anita's role is first and foremost the defensive one, making things tick is not the only consideration, otherwise you could play a nice passer in there with no defensive duties at all. Kanji
I prefer the usage of a wide shuttler, a wide 10, a false 9, a #10, a central shuttler, and a quattroporte making things tick.

If you are going to make a sweeping statement then you should at least give us some detail to back it up. You haven't really said anything there. Yeah, we aren't Barca Ajax or Swansea, why does that make any difference? Anita looks pretty quick in the tackle, and he's done well at full back when he's been asked to do that role, you generally have to be able to defend to do that. If you mean he's not physically strong enough then just say so. Even that is debatable for the role he's expected to play.
The College Dropout
Because Nemanja Matic would make a great fullback............ what? Different position. Different skill set largely. I don't think he's good enough defensively in a midfield 2 with him sitting only. He doesn't do anything with the ball of use. Unless played as the deepest of a midfield 3, he's average to crap. He doesn't make anything "tick". If we are going to take the approach where our fullbacks push on, a DM comes deep between the CB I entirely hope the player that does so attempts something useful with the ball! Lotus
Anita Sissoko Wijnaldum De Jong Thauvin Perez Diamond in the middle, 2 wide lads cutting in towards goal, De Jong making late runs into the box so he's difficult to pick up.

When you think of this you think Alonso, Pirlo.. heck Martinez did it to success with Barry (who has a good range of passing). TRon
I don't think he's good enough defensively in a midfield 2 with him sitting only. Yes I know you don't think he is, but why not? He doesn't do anything with the ball of use. That's not really true either, he usually passes it quickly to the nearest player. He's no Carrick that's for sure but then quite a few players aren't.
The College Dropout
Don't think he's physically capable. He's fairly quick but it takes a lot for him to cover ground, if only lateral. The only way he could be successful is if he has 2 other central midfielders near him. And it looks like McClaren likes his 4-4-1-1 with two water carriers. "Controlling the play" I think is the aim with those lads and protecting the defence.
