NEWCASTLE have told Mark Hughes they want him as boss.

Despite all the talk of Kevin Keegan returning to St James’ Park it is Hughes who has been approached by Toon chairman Chris Mort.

I understand Blackburn chief Sparky IS ready to quit Rovers. He refused to rule out the switch last night and said: “In football, you never say never.”

Hughes was contacted on Friday through a third party after Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp turned down the job.

The approach came at around 10pm after Redknapp scuppered a deal, having been told he would not be able to commute to Tyneside from his South Coast home.

Some on the Toon board have been dreaming of a Keegan-Alan Shearer partnership to replace the axed Sam Allardyce.

However, there has been NO contact with Shearer who, in turn, has not spoken with ex-boss Keegan.

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley returns from a trip abroad tomorrow to finally sanction who will should get the job. But he trusts Mort’s judgment.

Indeed, it was Mort who lobbied Ashley to get rid of Sam Allardyce last week.

The only thing stopping the appointment of Hughes would be if Ashley should become swayed by public opinion behind the Keegan-Shearer idea.

Former Manchester United and Barcelona star Sparky, 44, has enjoyed three cup semi-finals, a top-six finish and twice taken Rovers into Europe — all on limited resources.

He signed a three-year contract in May 2006. But it would cost only £500,000 to release him.

And after guiding Rovers to a 2-1 win at Bolton he added: “It’s not in my hands whether I’ll still be here at the end of the season.

“I have a good situation here and I am very conscious of that.

“This is a good club and I’m proud to be Blackburn manager.”

Interesting difference of opinion:

..there is obvious annoyance that the approach from Newcastle became public so quickly. "Harry Redknapp was never the only name in the frame," said a source. "There is a presumption that he was first choice but there is a difference between a job interview and a job offer. We have spoken to more than one person, we will be speaking to more people and it should not be narrowed down to people from these shores."

The reference to overseas possibilities will cause excitement about certain names but one of them, Louis van Gaal, has ruled himself out. Martin Jol was rather less certain, saying: "Newcastle is an interesting club with potential but I don't comment on speculation." While describing the football under Sam Allardyce as "abysmal", the Newcastle life president, Sir John Hall, threw up the name of Gérard Houllier. The striker Michael Owen would be delighted about that as he played under Houllier at Liverpool.

Redknapp described as "absolute rubbish" the idea that he wanted to commute from the South Coast by private jet, but Newcastle maintain that was his immediate demand. "People can say what they want," Redknapp said, "I was offered the job."

I believe Redknapp, Redknapp has no reason to lie, we do.

Think about it a bit harder, and see if your opinion changes.

I was right first time.

To say he has "no reason" to lie is utter bollocks, although I do think you're probably right.

There are a number of reasons that Redknapp would have to lie, but their not as big as ours are.

Just had an opportunity to view the post match interviews with Hughes and the BBC one was very very telling. Lets just say in my job for the Navy I am highly trained on body language (none of that looking down to the right nonsense though) his was of a man avoiding saying something at all costs. The biggest tell was when he went for the right side of his collar when asked about the Newcastle situation, when he was talking about how focused his whole staff was on the match.

If the board have not already been contacted about a package for him I will be very surprised, and I bet my house on the fact that Hughes knows it too. His refusal to meet the reporters eyes when asked if he is flattered about it says he wants it.

My only hope is that he realizes the risks involved. I want him to stay more than anything but even if he does go I will still like him.

The one thing you can be absolutely certain about is that Hughes will continue where Allardyce left off.

If Rovers had lost four on the bounce, the last being a 6 goal second half gubbing and were only 6 points ahead of 18th place, the press would be screaming about a relegation battle.

That is where Newcastle are now and that is how Hughes will see it.

Your football will be as black as your jersies for at least a year.

Redknapp's pay has just doubled to 3m per the BBC as a result of this debacle.  I think he had every reason to lie about a job offer from us.....it doubled his pay
