Keegan recommended Mears :o

Marseille secured the signing of Tyrone Mears from Derby County on the transfer deadline day, and chairman Pape Diouf has revealed that Kevin Keegan recommended the player to LOM.

It has been confirmed that the 25-year-old will be second choice right back at the Stade Velodrome this season behind Laurent Bonnart.

Mears is the first Englishman to join LOM in 12 years and Diouf has explained the secret behind this shocking move.

We were in the quest for a cover for Laurent Bonnart who could settle to French football, Diouf said. As a consequence, we used our connexions who recommended Tyrone to us.

I even contacted several persons I know in England, including Kevin Keegan, who described him as a top quality player.

They were on the phone because of the Taiwo deal... ;-)

Pavlyuchenko has been given some... advice... after joining Spurs;

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1054051/Former-Spurs-flop-Rebrov-launches-repulsive-racist-rant-warns-Pavlyuchenko-dangers-Tottenham.html

Former Spurs forward Sergei Rebrov has issued a despicable racist rant to Tottenham's new striker Roman Pavlyuchenko.

When asked, by a Russian journalist, how Pavlyuchenko should adapt to British life, the former Ukraine forward Rebrov said: 'A lot of dark skinned people lived near White Hart Lane so the crime rate was high.'

He also claimed that if Pavlyuchenko didn't want to be a 'robbery victim' he should avoid walking around the area close to the Spurs ground.

Rebrov, who was widely panned as a flop during his time at Spurs between 2000-2004, made his astonishing claims to Football Weekly magazine.

His comments are sure to provoke widespread criticism, not least from those that live in the north London communities in and around Tottenham.

He said: 'I wouldn't go for a walk on my own around White Hart Lane.

'A lot of dark skinned people live there. So naturally the crime rate is higher than anywhere else.

'It's not nice to be a robbery victim. So I suggest that Roman doesn't walk but drives around that area.'

Pavlyuchenko is expected to join his new club Tottenham on Thursday after playing for the Russian national team in their World Cup qualifier against Wales.

In the same article, ex-Fulham midfielder Alexei Smertin said: 'Of course there are districts where Roman shouldn't go on his own.

'The first place that springs to mind is Croydon. It's populated with predominantly low income folks. But I can't see why Roman should find himself there - it's quite far from the Tottenham area.'

Russian newspaper Sovetski Sport sent journalist Andrei Lyalin to check out the Tottenham area.

Lyalin told his readers: 'Seven Sisters tube station is just ten minutes ride from the centre of London. I got out there and it occurred to me that the area looked as English as the Arsenal team.

'Broken windows of sooty brick houses, dirty shops selling cheap fruits and vegetables at every corner, immigrant teenage gangs on bikes.'

He added that he was glad it was daylight when he went to the area, saying: 'Otherwise I would lose in the district much more than the £60 a black marketeer charged me for a ticket behind one of the goals.'

Apperently Real Madrid have offerd a trial to worlds fastest man Usain Bolt!

Am i the only one who really really wants to see him play?

Apparently he's been offered the chance to train with them and go to a game, seems like more of a publicity stunt then an actual trail.

Magpies let surprise package Zaki slip through their hands

Sep 18 2008 by Mark Douglas, The Journal

THE credibility of Newcastle United’s specialist recruitment team has been dealt a blow after it was revealed they missed out on a chance to sign Amr Zaki – the Egyptian international striker who has made a flying start to life in the Premier League with Wigan.

The presence of Dennis Wise and, to a lesser extent Tony Jimenez, heading up Newcastle’s recruitment efforts has been a festering sore to United fans, with their influence over transfer matters one of the major factors in Kevin Keegan’s resignation.

While owner Mike Ashley praised his appointments for the “first class” job they have done in their recruitment roles, missing out on Zaki – who has scored four goals in three Premier League games – is a further illustration of the teething problems suffered by United’s management structure.

The Journal understands that in the early months of the summer Newcastle were given a glowing recommendation of the El Zamalek striker, but while United’s recruitment team delayed a decision, Wigan were able to steal a march on them.

Steve Bruce’s success certainly seems like a triumph for the more traditional approach to player acquisitions championed by Wigan and their owner Dave Whelan.

Bruce works alongside a general manager but has the final say on transfers, and it was that relationship which allowed Wigan to trump United, who instead turned their attention to Villareal’s Spain under-21 striker Xisco.

As made clear by Ashley in his statement on Sunday, United do not have the funds to rival the big four in the transfer market. Instead they have turned their attention to the global market, with a particular focus on Spain. The imposing Zaki, who first came to United’s attention two years ago, would certainly qualify as one of the “rough diamonds” that Wise and Jimenez have been charged with unearthing, but on this occasion it appears as if they missed out.

Wise’s role is officially described as executive director (football) but his precise remit is yet another issue clouded in mystery. While he has no input in first-team selection or coaching, the former Millwall manager has substantial influence over transfers – brokering deals both for the first team and the club’s Academy.

Wise was reported to be at the Valley on Saturday watching Wolves’ England under-21 winger Michael Kightly but The Journal understands he was not in attendance.

While Wise does make scouting trips on behalf of the club, his circle of influence would appear to spread wider than merely player recruitment. As well as being credited with a major role in the hunt for Keegan’s successor – hence the thus far unsubstantiated link with Blackburn Rovers boss Paul Ince – he is also with Ashley in Dubai hunting for a new owner.

It presents a confusing picture of a management structure that, after a disappointing summer in the transfer market, has been discredited in the eyes of most supporters.
