Porto lose Champions League place

Portuguese champions Porto have been excluded from next season's Champions League over alleged bribery of referees in the 2003/04 season.

The allegations relate to Porto's 2-0 win against Estrela da Amadora and their 0-0 draw with Beira Mar.

Porto won their domestic title and the Champions League in 2003/04 under their former coach Jose Mourinho, who has not been mentioned in any allegations.

The club has already confirmed it will appeal against Uefa's decision.

Porto won their domestic title in 2004 by eight points from runners-up Benfica.

Last month, they were found guilty by the Portuguese league of fixing the two league matches in question.

As a result Porto were docked six points, but they decided not to appeal against that decision on the grounds the club had a substantial lead in the league.

The punishment did not affect final standings as Porto still won last season's title for the third time in a row, 14 points ahead of Sporting Lisbon.

However, the club's president Jorge Pinto da Costa has appealed against a two-year suspension and he will go to trial in a civil lawsuit by Porto prosecutors.

Boavista were relegated to the second division for their part in the match-fixing.

The affair, which came to light in April 2004, also resulted in five referees being suspended for periods between two-and-a-half and six years.

The referees were found guilty of accepting the offer of prostitutes after matches, while in once case an official received 2,500 Euros prior to a match.

Strange that they never got relegated the same as Boavista and only got a 6pt deduction in the league. From the outside and without knowing all of the facts it looks like double standards to me.

CSKA have been kicked out aswell cos of severe debts.

the whole thing is such a joke you wouldn't even believe it.. CSKA's boss is this former pseudo-politician who is known in Bulgaria as the biggest liar that communism ever produced..

the media are hysteric, fans are fighting, politicians are lying.. all in all quality entertainment for somebody who supports the rival Levski Sofia (they'll replace CSKA in the CL  )

although you lot obviously don't understand bulgarian it'd be worth it to check the following vids, for the sheer amount of abuse and aggression they contain.. first one is from the official press conference of the club, the second is the police escorting the cska boss out of the press-conference:

The normal procedure is that the BFU send the runner-up Levski Sofia to the CL instead, however it is reported that instead of this, the highest UEFA ranked team not already in the competition will be the replacement, and this is Milan.

According to this, Milan will take CSKA's Champions League spot, because they're the highest ranked team, who's not already in the competition. Porto is also out of the tournament and that means that Sevilla as the 2nd highest ranked team af Milan, will take their place.

Now it becomes interesting because the next team on the list is Newcastle, and if UEFA decides to use this rule, then it should also count in the UEFA cup, and who will then take over Milan and Sevillas UEFA cup qualifications? According to UEFA's rules, it should be Newcastle.

honestly speaking it should be the next bulgarian team but i wouldn't put it past uefa to find a way to squeeze in another team from one of the richer leagues and it wouild just be bloody typical of us to get it.

I agree with you, but as you say, UEFA would rather have the big teams in it....

But I don't know how realistic this is, it would be typical for Newcastle though :)

the next club in the bulgarian league (Levski) get the place, it has already been confirmed.

the papers in Italy published the story that Milan can replace CSKA in the CL yesterday, but that was denied by UEFA.
