No surprise to see NE5 still complaining. Pathetic.

its called ambition Dave

Signing a player of such calibre as Coloccini shows ambition.

You say time and time again that it's all about going for the best players. Well by all accounts this guy is miles better than what we have. Yet you're still f***ing complaining. What a joke.

of course I want more.

Thats the whole point.

Edit

Actually Dave, and this is a serious observation, whats your view on the comments from a few weeks ago and "keeping these deals quiet"? This one has been all over the press. Nobody rivalled us for him either ........ why not ?

Barca had a bid for him turned down last summer

Goma, Marcelino and Pistone were not in this guy's league in terms of ability or reputation, you really don't know what you're talking about

The length NE5 will go to, to forward his agenda is just shocking. To use Pistone, Goma as analogous examples to Colocini is just laughable and really discredits him (if his views are woth any credit that is)

you obviously didn't have much of a clue when we bought those players .........

I find it amazing to say this but defence is the last thing we should be thinking about strengthening.

this was the case last year too, which I said at the time,  but defenders are cheaper, or better business, or something

Seriously? ???

Without the defenders we brought in (Beye, Faye, Rozehnal, Caçapa, Enrique)... we'd have had Carr, Taylor, Ramage and Edgar to choose from.

A quality midfield player and striker would have the most impact on the team, this was the case last summer, and we bought how many defenders ? 5 ?

2 of them are squad players, not good enough. Faye, Beye and probably Enrique have played well especially the first 2. Thats above average when you are scouting among the basement transfer fees and freebies etc, but if Keegan has seen fit to spend the bulk of his budget [lower than most clubs ?] on a defender then I only hope he isn't another Marcelino, Pistone or Goma - but at least when we bought them we had good attackers and midfield players.

I know that you don't follow the foreign leagues NE5, but this player has a reputation as being one of the best defenders on two continents. Whether it works out is another question, but it is an ambitious move, up there with Woodgate.

of course, but so were Goma, Marcelino and Pistone. Lets hope he lives up to it. Bigger picture is that its only one signing, most clubs make one decent signing, real ambition for a club like Newcastle is still bigger than this, especially now when we will be starting the season with Ameobi in the team.

I see Bentley has moved to Spurs .......... as well as Modric, and Woodgate ........

Sorry dude, but Marcelino, Goma and Pistone didn't come here with the reputation of Coloccini, although I appreciate you may not realise this based on the fact that you only follow English football.

Who is to say we'll be starting with Ameobi? As far as I know, we have three perfectly good strikers, putting him much further down the pecking order than he was in 2004 and 2005.

As for Spurs, two things, first you mention Woodgate, well the player we're signing is considered in the world game as being on the same calibre. Besides, there are supposed to be reasons that we missed out on Modric and Woodgate for reasons beyond our control. Meanwhile Bentley had already said he wouldn't ever go to Newcastle because of our reputation for constant managerial change.

Besides, assuming Coloccini goes through, our net spend is larger than Spurs, plus we haven't lost our best performing striker.

All over the press? We've been chasing him for months according to the agent who broke it all.

Nobody rivalled us for him? mackems.gif You know f*** all, just like me, so don't pretend you do.

The facts are you have absolutely no intention whatsoever of crediting the board for a thing. We're on the verge of spending £9m on a defender who is very highly rated and improving the team, yet you're complaining now that they're not the right position. We could sign an entire new team and you'd complain. That's called an agenda. You've become a complete farce.

complete rubbish.

People like you have complained for years about the old regime and buying "trophy players" and other such s****. People like me have ALWAYS said we should be buying players like this.

I take it he isn't a "trophy player" ? I bet he would be if the old regime had shelled out 10m+ for a 26 year old defender.

My point is consistent all the way down the line, I support signings like this, whoever makes them. My point is that for a club like Newcastle, we need to do more than the vast majority of clubs, and we haven't yet done that. Other people have made the same point, so don't make out I'm alone in this view.

At the end of the day, its others who base their "opinions" on personalities, and its clear to see who they are.

Ok then try saying this, "the current board is doing well, this signing shows that they are on the right track and so far are showing the right level of ambition"

Was Woodgate a trophy player? Or was he adored? You tell me.

Woodgate ? Terrific signing. Would have been if we had got him again too., assuming he stays injury free.

Disagree with the fact he was "adored" though, he didn't really play enough in the end, and I have to say, I don't think we saw him at his best very often either.

I think the whole concept of a club challenging at the top end of the table buying "trophy" players is stupid to be honest, the whole concept of the phrase is just a daft cliche. These sort of players are what you want to buy if you want to win things.

See, I say this no matter who it is. Unlike others ........

I've said my piece. I'll let those of you who agree with each other be accused of turning this thread into an old board jizzfest

Haha, as if.

I honestly think we'd have to win the Premier League before NE5 would credit them a thing. If we won a cup, he'd say we should have won the FA Cup at the old Wembley, if we got into the CL, he'll say the old lot did it more.

He will not admit they've done ANYTHING right, simple as that.

What happened to that thread where you said you were not going to go on about the old board anymore, mate?

I think you will find that is down to the usual people who can't read properly.

when they match the old regime Dave ......... can YOU admit the old board did so well its a tall order ....

In fact, as the old board came 2nd twice, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th ..........

Price and the quality of player sometimes isn't a general correlation btw, as Habib Beye proves.

Try telling that to the 'Gutierrez must be shit' crew.

stick to the facts

I don't think anyone has said the old board didn't do well for a long time despite some blips along the way, they just acknowledge that we were sinking fast at the end of their reign.

Ok, give them however many years it takes, to try and match that.  Then start posting on this forum again with your "I told you so" stuff.  You just seem to have it in for them purely because they've not been doing it as long as those that came before.

I agree with NE5. The phrase 'trophy signing' is stupid with negative connotations. We should be spending good money to bring in players who have the best chance of making us better than other clubs around us. Simple as that really.

The Old Board went all out to get players their managers wanted (on the whole, bar Souness' claims and rumours Shepherd told SBR he couldn't have Seiteridis or Miguel but Carr instead as he's cheaper).

The evidence on the New Board is so far inconclusive.

I think it comes down to a fine line decision to make: do you spend slightly recklessly to get a player in, knowing your manager wants him and says he can bring success or do you miss out on a player and keep a weak squad/team as you don't want to be held to ransom, ensuring you won't achieve much and may get invovled with relegation scraps?

The old board would most of the time plump for the former when push came to shove, the new board shows signs of the latter. Which is a shame as the New Board has a billionaire at its helm.

Just to compare the records of a few players pre-NUFC for you NE5:

Marcelino

One good Cup Winners Cup run, and three decent years at Mallorca playing alongside a better player. No caps for Spain.

Goma

2 caps for France, won a few trophies with some strong French teams. Performances were good but nothing to shout about.

Pistone

Caps for Italy U21, appeared to have a good future in Italy after one season at Inter.

Clearly these were three players who were good, but didn't get the television/internet exposure you get these days, so got hyped up by a good write up in the Chronicle.

Now look at these two:

Woodgate

Good performances for Leeds in the Champions League, a couple of England caps.

Coloccini

Argentinian first teamer with 27 caps. Good performances in Spain for five years. Played in World Cup. Olympic gold medalist.

Clearly there is a jump from Goma, Marcelino and Pistone to Woodgate and Coloccini, and Colocinni is arguably the more reputable of the two.

We need a dominating centre half.  If we want a good one & a few other good players we might have to bulk out the squad in the free transfer or cut price fee market.  If thats what the manager has decided, then that's fair enough for me.

The club may have slightly limited funds, or limited funds by the standards and expectations that people have come to expect.  If that is the case people might have to accept it for the time being, at least in the short term.

with the 3rd biggest crowd and support in the country, and 14th /15th turnover [something like that] in europe ?

We won't mention who created that  ;D but I'm sorry but punching that weight is what you should be expecting.

Yeah but most of what I posted there about the transfers we are targetting are a cut and paste job on your opinions from 18 months ago.
