Guest gggg
There's certainly a case that he is the worst player. Paulo Rossi just pips him i think. Although he was more deserving of the award for that year than a few of the winners (Cannavaro for one) which is what the award should be based on. Frazzle
Cant believe people are putting Owen in the same league as Torres mind. At his best Owen was a player with searing pace that scored goals if given the supply. He was a Walcott, a Dyer (albeit at his best much, much better) in that his play relied on pace. Now thats gone he has little but to bemoan the service. Torres obviously relies on service at times, but Torres has pace, skill, strength and finishing. Owen had two of these, he now arguably has one. In the last few months with us, he had none. He must be the worst Ballon D'Or winner in history then. Looking at that list of players, he is clearly the worst one by a mile. By a mile? OK... There'll never be a decent discussion on here involving Owen because everyone way too is biased for whatever reasons.

Theres no doubting that he was a very good player in his time, and for a while he was an excellent finisher for us. But he was never at Torres standard. The argument that Torres plays in a better team is fair enough, but then you have to say that Torres played for Athletico Madrid who were less of a team again and still performed and scored plenty of goals. Obviously its ambiguous but Ive watched Owen from the start to the end of his career and imo he's never been as good a player as what Torres has been. dcmk
This is Fernando Torres who managed 24 league goals in his first season in english football, a figure Owen hasn't come near in 10 seasons, even when he took penalties for Liverpool You mean the worlds best striker in a team that is ALOT more attacking then Houlliers ever was. When Owen used to play for Liverpool they would shut up shop when they get 1-0 in front, and he got 18 or 19 in many seasons, not bad for someone who always picks up injuries too. Rubbish comparison

Decky
Surely if teams like Villa and Everton were genuinely interested then he would have had contracts long before now? I can honestly only see the likes of Wigan going in for him. Unless of course he is once again holding out for a team like Liverpool.

I think the fact that Taylor wasn't even a regular for Wigan sort of sign posted that he was shit. We got the reverse effect from Man U fans. We were told Nicky Butt and Alan Smith were good and they weren't. We got told by Coventry fans that Bellamy was shit and he wasn't.

He may had shouted his mouth off at every given opportuinity and just as injury prone as Owen, but sh1t i wished we kept him instead of shipping him out and wasting 17 million on that turd. Typical, great buisness by Shepperd as usuall.

When Bellamy was hounded out of the club everyone thought it was a great deal to get England's Michael Owen, but it's far better to have someone who's heart is in it and can provide other things to the team as a whole. Dave
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/premier_league/wigan/article6515121.ece Wigan not interested in injury-prone Michael Owen James Ducker If Michael Owen thought that his stock could not fall any farther, the Newcastle United striker might want to think again. Dave Whelan was prepared to break the bank to sign Owen from Real Madrid four years ago before the player's £16million move to St James' Park, but the Wigan Athletic chairman effectively conceded yesterday that he would not touch the England outcast with a barge pole now. Wigan did not receive a copy of the glossy 34-page brochure distributed to eight Barclays Premier League clubs by Owen's management company in a bizarre attempt to drum up interest in the former European Footballer of the Year, and to judge from Whelan's remarks, it was probably a good job. Owen strenuously maintains that he still has the desire to compete at the highest level, but Whelan expressed misgivings over the striker's injury record and wage demands - Owen earns £115,000 a week at Newcastle. “We've not had the brochure,” Whelan said. “Would we be interested? No. One, his wages are too expensive. Two, has he got the urge, the bottle and the drive to do what the Premier League wants? It's a big question. “I hope he has because he has been a great player. I tried to sign him and said to his agent I would pay £15million to bring him to Wigan and let him leave whenever he wanted. “But he's looking a bit injury-prone now and loves his horses. I'm not criticising the lad, he has been a magnificent player and can still do a hell of a job for somebody, but I think he will want to go to a much bigger club than Wigan. Everton and Liverpool might think differently.” lol
