People keep asking me what’s going on, but I certainly don’t know – and I don’t think anyone outside the club does. I haven’t got a clue – honestly, I haven’t – and it’s so frustrating.

I’m like all Newcastle fans, I would like it sorted. But there’s only one man who can do that.

Unfortunately I’m not sure that anyone knows the ins and outs of it, whether the club is going to be sold or whether he’s going to keep hold of it.

People have said bids have gone in, but no one really knows the truth. I don’t read about it any more. I’ve seen enough deadlines come and pass so I don’t read any of it.

It’s still a very difficult and precarious situation at Newcastle and it pains me to see that.

They are talking about giving Chris Hughton the job permanently and with the way things are I’d probably back that because it’s difficult circumstances. You read Mike Ashley say he and not the manager will control players coming in and out.

So effectively, Chris is a coach, and not a manager, even if he takes the job. It’s not ideal.

I would still like to be the manager of Newcastle again one day.

If the situation came around and everything was right and in place then without a doubt I would love to give it another go. But that’s not up to me.

It’s not just a job at Newcastle, though, because if the right post came along somewhere else I would definitely look at it too.

But obviously I went in at Newcastle and I really, really enjoyed it. I hoped I was going to be in there for the long term.

I would love to go back, but let’s make this clear: I’m not connected to any bids. And nobody has said to me, ‘If I get in and I buy the football club I want you to be the manager’.

It’s true I am a friend of Barry Moat, but at this moment and for the last however many months or years he’s not reached an agreement.

So what’s the point in talking about it? That’s the way I see it.

I can't see why this idea that Ashley has no intention of selling should persist. He publicly declared that he'd sell for £100m. If he wasn't serious, that leaves him wide open to exposure if someone then does bid £100 million and he still turns them down. So far, nobody has said that's happened. Potential buyers either haven't come up with the money, or when they've looked closely at the club's financial position, decided not to go ahead.

The real debate is whether £100m is a fair price. If someone has money to invest in players to ensure promotion, it's a bargain. For the likes of Moat, who it seems can't invest any more than Ashley, it's too much of a risk.

It's the same debate, ffs. Why do you think I'm saying I don't think he really wants to sell?

Mike Ashley to stay in charge at Newcastle

MIKE ASHLEY looks resigned to staying in charge at Newcastle – despite would-be buyer Barry Moat remaining bullish about his prospects of clinching a deal for the club.

Newcastle have broken off talks with an American-based consortium fronted by Lancashire businessman Geoff Sheard, leaving Moat and another, unnamed American group as the only remaining takeover contenders.

Although he and Moat held informal talks at St James’s Park yesterday, Ashley’s demand to receive his asking price for United in one lump sum has still not been met.

And, although he will not officially take Newcastle off the market while an American-based group maintains some interest in a takeover, Ashley will now look to confirm Chris Hughton’s appointment as permanent manager.

The Sunday Sun understands Moat offered Ashley less than £40m up front, with the remaining money in guaranteed instalments, for United.

Hughton, meanwhile, is hopeful of agreeing a one-year contract worth £300,000 – with the option of another 12 months – to cover the value of his current £150,000-a-year coaching deal, which runs until the summer of 2011.

And the caretaker boss insists he is unconcerned that the club’s unresolved ownership saga may undermine his long-term credibility as manager as he aims to pull off his “proudest achievement” in football.

“The impression I am under is that the club is still available for sale . . . as far as I am aware the situation hasn’t changed,” Hughton told the Sunday Sun.

“But the important thing is to be given the opportunity to take this group of lads back into the Premier League. That’s what drives me on. Winning promotion would be my proudest achievement.

“I don’t want to speak about the actual contract. I already had a contract which runs until the end of next season.

“The key thing for me is that they want me here and I want to be here. It is a very nice feeling.”

And Hughton is convinced he has the mettle to succeed in full-time charge, adding: “Man management, I don’t think, will be a problem.

“I have learned a fair bit about that side of the game during my spells as temporary manager and my years in the game have also helped.

“And, as a coach and a player, I have worked under some very good managers and I like to think I have learned something from all of them.

“But I think above all you have to be yourself. If you try to be someone else then people will see through that one.”

Moat doesn't have the money. He's dependent on outside backers from the US who we know nothing about, and they would effectively be running the show, not Moat. He who pays the piper calls the tune. It's reasonable to assume they'd be wanting some return on their investment, even if it's just interest rather than profit.

On top of that, it would help the promotion push if Hughton were confirmed in charge and everyone knew where they stood. Some are saying he's not up to it, but we're top of the league despite a bad injury situation.

Time to end all the uncertainty. At least for this season.
