Joey Barton

I don't think he's the stand out best player at the club. He's certainly in a bunch of players who are all similar standard e.g Enrique, Jonas, Taylor.

Am going off the standard of football i've seen him produce over his career. Enrique and Taylor still have some way to go on that front.

If Barton stays, he will be instrumental.

Does this mean he won't open his f***ing mouth?

He should be captain, might sort him out to be given a position reflective of his skills as a person. He's a talker and aggressive with it, like Bill Bremner was.

*slightly controversial*

Trouble is he is such a cock. Widely rumoured to be very unpopular with the rest of the squad and seems completely up his own arse. The rows with other players and various coaches are too numerous to have no foundation. Also I'm told he kept Hughton and the match squad waiting in the plane for almost an hour at Birmingham airport after the WBA game. If Hughton was a stronger character he'd have given instructions to take off without him.

If Shearer gets the manager's job there's an interesting situation brewing.

If Shearer gets the job he'll more than likely tell Barton to find another club. Barton's football ability isn't in question but the fact he is a grade A cunt and rarely plays enough matches to warrant special treatment takes the shine off all that.

Bellamy was a grade A c*** and selling him was the epitomy of Souness's idiocy.

What did Shepherd expect when he brought Souness in.  I knew what he would do.

Come in & act like the big I am, piss people off.  The talent leaves then he eventually leaves.

Cock wipe.

Effective on the pitch, though, and contributed more to this club than Barton has, and most likely, ever will.

Wasnt comparing their abilities directly, only their cuntishness.

We'll do better this year with him in the team.

Probably, but he really needs to play at least 40-45 matches this season and put in consistent, good performances and then I'll get off his back. He should look at himself before he starts pointing the finger, tbh.

I agree that Barton is the best footballer at the club. He's a good all round midfielder, comfortable on the ball and a good, incisive passer - defintely the player most likely to create chances on a consistent basis, I would have thought. He offers much more on the ball than Smith, and not as behind the pace as Nolan has often seemed to be since he arrived. He's not as much of a ball winner as I thought he was after seeing him a few times at Man City, and is a bit one paced, but I reckon he'll be a class above in the Championship. He also seems to be the kind of character who will drive a team forward if he can keep himself disciplined (mass ive IF, I know).

I've also recently spoken to someone who knows him well, and apparently he is not the sort of character Bellamy is at all. Whereas Bellamy, by all accounts, can't help winding people up and causing general disruption on a daily basis, the guy I spoke to says Barton is a genuinely nice guy 99% of the time, and gets on well with the other players and management, apart form a) if he is on the beeros or b) something just makes him flip. He is a total Jekyll and Hide.

Listen to him in interviews: he's one of the most well-spoken, thoughtful players around, but obviously has some serious issues.

I can't claim to know how well liked in the dressing room Barton is, it could just be journalist talk...although I give it more credence if it's in the Journal rather than the Sun. Sheraer wanted Bellamy out as well so you could make an argument he is too uncompromising. For me though it's about the rest of the playing squad. You want players who will fight together as a team and who will have a good cameraderie. If Barton's capable of being part of that then great, if not then he's more trouble than he's worth.

in interviews he seems intelligent, witty and likeable. I remember that interview he did for Inside sport and I was totally surprised by how well he came across. A few weeks later he was beating a guy senseless in Liverpool city centre at 5am.  :undecided: bit of a psycho.

I'd say that Barton was technically the best player at the club, by a landslide. However, i wouldn't say he is the most important - we can't rely on him to be that simply due to the fact he's more injury prone than Owen. I'd say Taylor was the most important, incidentally, or Jonas - if for the fact he's the only winger we've got left after Duff fucks off.

He's been constantly injured for the last two seasons. He's missed over 70 games since he came here for one reason or another. He got injured at the weekend. He got injured i think one, maybe two or three (not sure), games after his return last season.

Pretty sure the whole spending a few months in prison and getting a 12 game ban is the main reason Barton didnt play much last season. Then cattermole nobbled him, like he does everyone. Dont think Bartons shown himself to be massively injury prone really.
