To be fair, at the talk in charity dinner, Barton said after he stops playing football this is where he'll end up (the NE) as he loves it.

 

Fair play to him I'm sure he does love it, but we have got rid of other players who loved it here as well because the football comes first. Joey should have signed the contract when he had the chance but now we've moved on. I'm sure he could still stay mind if his cunt of an agent was prepared to lower his demands.

Joey Barton says he is just "a pawn" at Newcastle - and that the club refused him even a 1pm pay rise.

 

The controversial midfielder, whose contract is up at the end of next season, told Talksport: "I don’t want to go, but that’s football. The clubs are the ones with the power and we’re just employees. If the football club wants a change of direction then the players are used as pawns and moved on or pushed out.

 

"I believe in my ability and if Newcastle don’t think I’ll play past 29 then more fool them and I’ll go and ply my trade elsewhere

 

Barton said he attempted to broker a new deal earlier this year "but I got a call saying there would be no negotiation. I was told they weren’t going to offer even 1p a week more. I was a bit taken aback. but that’s football. I believe in my ability and if Newcastle don’t think I’ll play past 29 then more fool them and I’ll go and ply my trade elsewhere."

 

The former Manchester City and England man said he would do his best for Newcastle in the 2011/12 season but expected to quit at the end of the campaign.

 

He said: “I’d be very surprised if I leave this summer. I’ve had a few phone calls about interest and would I go here, or do that. That’s the nature of the game.

 

“Unless someone can offer me the opportunity to play at the next level, and that’s the Champions League, I won’t be leaving the club.”

From what I recall at the talk in, he said that they were very close to agreeing a deal in January but then the goalposts were moved and then the Carroll thing happened which made him stop and think about the direction of the club, so he was decided to delay the discussions till the end of the season.

Coloccini is 29 but is on an 80k a week deal he got before Lllambias came in and a general change in policy was made, so will be impossible to move on.

 

Williamson is 27 but will not be a high earner.

 

Smith is for sale. Lovenkrands only has a year left and could well be surplus to requirements.

 

Shola will never leave.

 

That leaves Barton and Gutierrez as the only outfield players in the squad aged 27 or over, Jonas with 2 years on his contract, Barton with only 1.

Have to say I find this quite baffling. He's been here since 2007 and has had 1 good season. I don't imagine he's on a pittance either.

Joey Barton has expressed his desire to stay at Newcastle, following on from his initial disappointment at the imminent departure of Magpies skipper Kevin Nolan.

 

Barton tweeted angrily on Wednesday that more departures may occur after news surfaced that Nolan had gone for a medical examination at West Ham, where he is expected to be named the club's new captain on Thursday. Later, Barton revealed that he has no plans of heading toward the exit door at St James' Park, if given the option.

 

"I have got no ambitions to leave the football club, I don't want to leave the football club. I would love nothing more so than to win a trophy at Newcastle, the same way as a number of players. Whether I get the opportunity to do that is out of my hands," he told Sky Sports News.

 

28-year-old Barton has reportedly been told that his current deal, which expires in 12-months, will not be renewed at Newcastle. However, the midfielder pledged his loyalty to the club on Wednesday evening, and said he had faith that the team would come out of Nolan's likely transfer in a strong position.

 

"Obviously, it would be a great disappointment to lose Kev. He's a great pal and I think he has done fantastically for the football club. But this is the game we are in, unfortunately. Sometimes it is a little bit like ships in the night.

 

"Hopefully, the move breaks down, but if it doesn't, you have got to believe in the process of the football club, and no one player is bigger than the football club," he said.

Barton need's to shutup, wait for pre-season and let his football do the talking.  If he does that, then other clubs will pay him what he wants or he will change the mind's of those at the top at NUFC.
