What was that crap in front of Harper's goal in the 2nd half? (Not Colocinni) Looked like someone had dropped their stottie on the pitch.

In the first ten minutes we played the ball on the deck and looked to have left off like we did against Reading, then for some reason we went far too route one and although Shola got a goal it was extremely unsuccesful for the rest of the time. We have a ball playing Midfield but we don't use them and it was infuriating to watch.

Thought everyone but Ryan Taylor was ok (he's not a winger, couldn't skin anything if his life depended on it). Don't know why the subs were made so late on, we looked exhausted in the last 20 and the team have to play more games this season, so it's vital we keep them as fresh as possible.

Overall it was tough, but we shot ourselves in the foot a bit by not playing to our strengths.

Simpson took off all of that tape stuff they use for their shin pads and socks and stuff.

How was Simpson?

Not very good IMO, not point having a go yet though he'll take a few games to settle in.

Thought he was ok defensively, but some well timed tackles in, but seemed scared to get forward or play any decent pass (though the movement in front of him was poor). Steven Taylor was constantly telling him to get wider, and make runs down the channel.

hes only had a few training sessions with the team yet so obviously it will take a little time to settle in

Kevin Nolan is possibly the most immobile footballer ive ever seen. Thought enrique was immense again and sholas strike was quality. Why oh why didnt i hoy a fiver on him first goal!

How smith is captain when he cant control himself let alone others is beyond me.

Great result, shaky performance.

Got back about 20 minutes ago. Heres my take on it:

We won, and thats where it stops so Im delighted with that. However, Hughton and/or the players fail to realise at time where most of our joy is coming from. Id say 90% of the time we had the ball in the second half especially we were either looking for the killer ball straight away, lobbing it forward which rarely worked at all, or passing it about with very very little movement.

Kevin Nolan was again absolutely anonymous, as was Alan Smith. Most of our creative play was through R.Taylor and Enrique. Jonas was always outnumbered and kept quiet as a result.

Nolan cannot and should not start the next match, as soon as Guthrie came on he was getting the ball, turning into space and spraying it about, basically everything Nolan should have been doing but wasnt.

Shola was probably our best player, but hardly ever had the ball because it was a constant case of ball lobbed forward, header down, Sheff Wed play it about a bit.

Sheff Wed by the way are very, very toothless. They pass it about fairly neatly but they had no urgency or attacking flair at all, it seemed more like a training exercise when they had the ball. Defensively it was very easy tbh. Colo was shit most of the time and we still got away with it because either Enrique or Taylor were always there to sort his mess out.

Harper - 7: Great save from one of their freekicks

Simpson - 6: Solid debut

Taylor - 7: Solid

Colo - 4: Turned, outmuscled, beaten in the air, fannying on in dangerous positions, lack of communication with Harper, in general: Shite

Enrique: 8 Solid again, got forward well and played some very nice through balls quite often.

R.Taylor: 7: Not bad for most of the match, faded a lot towards the end

Nolan: 4 If I hadn't known the team before the match I'd have guessed he'd been sent off early on

Smith: 4 As above except with his obligatory terrible challenge in the 17th minute

Jonas: 5 Generally man-marked throughout the match

Carroll - 6: Good first half, no supply for the second. Needs to start taking chances early though.

Ameobi - 8: Great goal that I really didnt expect to go in, some really lovely touches and great skill, just goes to show what confidence can do. Really didnt have enough of the ball though, despite that, MOTM

Guthrie - 7: Came on and immediately did everything that you'd expect from a midfielder playing for NUFC, moving with the ball into space and playing inventive passes. Should start next match imo

Xisco - 5: Tried hard, but failed. Feel sorry for the lad a bit, you can tell he has it, but you get the impression he doesnt have any self belief at the moment. He just needs to scuff one in and go from there.

Ranger - 7: Won just about every header he went for, unfortunately there was no one there to run onto them. Looked sharp and confident, I know most of us would have liked to see him come on earlier before this match because of the hype he has on here, but I think he did enough to justify being brought on ahead of Xisco, or at the very least 10 minutes earlier.

Deserved win, but by christ did we make hard work of it! Players just seemed to run out of gas in the 2nd half and once again the lack of pace and movement was there for all to see. However, a wins a win and we've made a good start. Still need some extra bodies in though.

Coloccini was rubbish in the first half. Wednesday looked to play the ball over the top of him to get him turned. He always allows the striker to get goal side. And this from an £10million international defender. Bloody schoolboy stuff.

Crowd very impressive tonight and the atmosphere was good. Wednesday fans were a bit quiet throughout, only singing in bursts (was sat directly below them in the Leazes)

Harper 8 - 2 brilliant saves right in front of me. Those who said hewas s**** after WBA should hang their heads, very solid. MOTM

Simpson 6 - decent debut, has an agressive approach by the look of him

Taylor 7.5 - well played, nice and solid

Coloccini 7 - as always, gets better as the game goes on.  Often outpaced and outjumped but was always there when it mattered

Enrique 8 - just pipped for motm, solid in defence and dangerous in the other half. Our best player so far this season

R Taylor 6 - average, not a winger

Nolan 4.5 - horrible, absolutely horrible and was sucking wind by the 70 minute mark.

Smith 5 - should have been sent off after 30 minutes, two many daft challenges. Guthrie should stroll back in

Jonas 5 - plays with no confidence in his ability to beat people, as ever needs to play deeper and with his head up

Carroll 6 - He works hard but needs to work badly on his first touch and improve his general awareness. No confidence in his shooting

Shola 7 - Great finish, offside so often it's criminal. Not helped by the lack of a midfield

Barton and Guthrie HAVE to start whenever fit, but wont with that w***** in charge

Jonas & Colo have given up IMO, this rumour that Ashley told the players that there would be no more player sales may be true, both looked really fkd off tonight.

Not celebrating the goal was a disgrace, come to think of itr did they celebrate on Saturday?

Ranger only won one header didn't he?  :shifty:

Was quality though, got a massive cheer.  ;D

LOL realy couldn't expect more from him considering the time he had on the pitch, he looked lively and nearly created with that header he won, like to see him get longer out there or possibly a start :-X ..

Don't know what the f*** happened to the squad when they decided to join harper on the pitch in the second half (thought they had went on strike) and to be honest they looked like it, they seemed deflated "dressing room bust up maybies :tickedoff: "

Hughton needs to get his arse up into level 7 and see the game from there (might learn a thing or two), and yes it was like a b****** sauna up there tonight..

Scrappy game but one we won so all is good..

Any of you see that lad that slept through the entire 2nd half in L7F and had to be woken up after the game, poor bastard must have been bored shitless, had no idea where he was when he came round lmao...

Both just seemed to stand there tonight looking disinterested, mind that was what I seen after I had finished jumping about.
