ASTON VILLA have offered striker Marlon Harewood to Newcastle for a cut-price £1.5million.

 

Harewood, 31, scored five goals during a loan spell at St James' Park but was sent back when Villa demanded a loan fee on top of the £28,000-a-week wages they were paying.

 

Villa acted after realising Magpies were chasing Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford instead of going for their man.

 

They have pitched the asking price at the same level as Beckford's current worth in the hope Newcastle will pick the experienced Harewood instead.

 

Hull are also monitoring the forward's situation but have yet to make a formal bid.

I expect the club to be quite "hush hush" about their business. Wouldn't shock me if we signed a couple of players out of the blue, like Kevin Nolan last January.

 

I 100% agree with the hush hush part, if its one thing we knoiw itas they dont let fuck all out!!!

 

I still expect a sriker, in some form, CB plus (optimism) a midfielder

I know what i said in the Beckford thread but neither would be good value(unless we get Harewood for a minimal amount til June)  above that, in theory £200k is a fair price for Harewood for this season, by no means longer

He'd want  a 3 year deal at £30k a week and would have a resale value of zero. Beckford would want less and we'd almost certainly get some money back when we sold him.

 

Not particularly enthusistic about either tttt.

NEWCASTLE owner Mike Ashley and managing director Derek Llambias have been busy early on in the transfer window . . . in Las Vegas.

 

While United manager Chris Hughton started his bid to sign the players to boost the club’s priceless promotion campaign, his bosses flew to the States at the start of the week.

 

Hughton has been promised money to spend in January, but will have needed to confer with Newcastle’s top brass on whether to up his bid for Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford.

 

The purpose of Ashley and Llambias’ trip to the world’s gaming capital is unknown, although Llambias is a former boss of now-closed London casino 50 St James and once managed a similar club in Vegas.

 

While the duo were away, the Newcastle United Supporters’ Trust’s attempt to buy Ashley out picked up pace, with Newcastle City Council revealing it will consider giving the fans’ bid its official backing.

 

Newcastle’s search for new firepower is becoming ever more urgent as the Championship chasing pack hunt them down.

 

And the Sunday Sun understands that promotion rivals West Brom are lining up a bid for Leicester City hotshot Matty Fryatt.

Hasn't Farrington heard of email and telephones ?

And the city council story - WOW !

His standard journalism is about the same as Ashley's standard of running a football club, he must have been inthe desert himself if thats the best he can come up with for his Sunday diatribe.

I'd be happy with signing someone who scores as many as Nolan this season tbh.

According to that, which was taken from an Argentinian newspaper, Riquelme will turn down offers from Corinthians and European clubs (notably Newcastle) to stay at Boca Juniors. :lol:

methinks that south america may not have caught up with our relegation, or colo and jonas may have been to embarrassed to tell them

Chris Hughton has warned Leeds that he won’t wait much longer to land top strike target Jermaine Beckford.

 

Newcastle have tabled a £1.25million bid for the 26-year-old, but Hughton wants the business done quickly - or he could re-sign Aston Villa star Marlon Harewood on loan for a fraction of the price.

 

Leeds are expected sell this month because Beckford is out of contract in the summer and has submitted a transfer request.

 

Hughton said: “There comes a time when we will have to look elsewhere. We’d prefer to do our business early but there comes to a stage, if you have a specific target in mind, that you have to move on to other targets.

“In the ideal scenario you do your business as quickly as possible, but in most cases it doesn’t tend to happen that way. That’s the frustration this window brings.

 

“I am still confident, very, very confident, we will get the three players we want to add to the squad.

 

“I’ve identified the players. Then the logistics of that, whoever needs to be spoken to, is done by others. It’s not a distraction for me.”

 

Newcastle want to keep Danny Simpson beyond the West Brom game next Monday when his loan spell runs out. Hughton said: “He has done very well and it is something we are working on.

 

“It is one of the areas we have consistently said we want to bring players in. Right-back, centre-back and centre-forward. Not necessarily different players, all the players we have brought in on loan have done very well.”

To be fair I doubt he has the resources to go after a midfielder as well.
