Interesting data crunching on the relationship between possession and shots, which is related to our experience at Swansea the other week. The graph shows Swansea have far fewer shots than they should. It’s fine to pass it around but if you get nowhere near goal, there’s not much point to it.

Also:

- In general, more possession = more shots

- Premier League is more direct, with more shots on goal.

- Most efficient teams: Man City, Real Madrid, Spurs, Chelsea, Juventus

- Least efficient teams: Ajaccio, Koln, Swansea, Evian, Athletic Bilbao

- Swansea see more possession than Man City, yet have six fewer shots per game. Man United have as many shots as Barcelona, despite 12% less possession per game.

Yet we scored 22 more league goals with the same amount of shots. The point of dominating possession is not generating more shots, is being able to select those better. We'd probably enjoy less possession if we tried to shot more, as there'd be more turnovers.

Without reading the article, the criticism of Swansea (in general) is way too harsh.  The aim of all newly promoted teams is to stay up and they've done that with ease.

Its all well and good saying its a waste of time and that but there's no evidence to say if they went more direct they'd be more successful.  Its the same argument made against Barcelona after they've won a trophy every 20 games or something under Guardiola.

Stat crunchers man. They're nice and all, but people always use them to tell their own story, never giving a true critical analysis.

I've been critical of a few things Moyes has said and done over the past year or 2, but this is bang on the money:

Despite being pleased his side are in line for another strong top-half finish, Moyes insists that certainly doesn’t mean he will not be aiming higher next term.

“If you had given me [7th place] at the start of the season I might have said yes as it is close to where we have been in recent years, but I can’t be that happy with finishing seventh or eighth because that is no ambition at all."

Ranieri favourite for the WBA job. Eh?

Hmmm, the return of the Tinkerman to the PL would be a sight to behold. Though tbf, he was treated unfairly by Abramovich (not that it mattered a season later when Mourinho won the PL).
