Scunthorpe Utd 2 - 1 Newcastle Utd - 20/10/09 - Post match reaction from page 20

Recommended Posts

I said after the 0-4 at Ipswich that the team were getting results so no more could be asked of them, but even then I knew there would be a drop-off in performances eventually.

The weaknesses in the side have been there for 2 years and now other teams in this league(which some on here thought was a cake-walk because of early results)have begun to suss out the cracks after watching us play for several games.

Jonas is not the answer on the flanks and I don't rate Lua-Lua either from what I've seen of him so there is not ONE decent winger at the club ; the forwards are too similar, as I said after Forest and lack pace(which is a comment that could be applied to many in the team).

The only player who is really worth decent money is Enrique and as has been said, I wouldn't be surprised to see him sold soon.

Once this team goes behind, it struggles because there isn't the raw pace in the side to catch the opposition out on breaks from defence ; all they have to do is score first and soak up unimaginative attacks, although Nolan did equalize in this match, highlighting once again that he, a midfield player, is the main goal threat.

The club is fortunate that WBA also lost - KK's team of 92/93 would, like last time, have been out of sight of other challengers by now, and half-decent results over the last 4 games would have seen this side in a good position. They are clearly not up to being back in the Prem yet and until the club is either sold or receives much-needed investment by its owner, nothing will change quickly.

Play-offs the most realistic target at present.

tbf it's hardly luck that WBA got beat. i wonder if people on their forums are saying it's lucky we got beat. i guess man utd were lucky last season that other teams got beat more than them.

it's the nature of the championship that last season both brum and wolves were up top most of the season but went through spells of going 4 or 5 games without points and also gaining points that were undeserved.

someone said at the start of the season thast we will be decided upon by how we react to getting poor results against teams such as scunthorpe............that stands.

Another comment that Gol won't like that had me chuckling was a lad behind me having a conversation with his mate before the game.

1: "Hey, these lot are shit like aren't they. Quiet as owt"

2: "Don't say that mate, the whole village has turned out to see them. They've shut the shop and everything".

Did you know that the entire population of Scunthorpe could be seated in St James Park?

And Dave, no I haven't asked them all, but you know full well what I mean.

I'd question why Vukic isn't getting a look in, given that he seems to have something that nobody else in the squad does.

I guess with Kev Nolan being the attacking midfielder & our top goalscorer that keeps Haris out of the team. He should at least be on the bench though.

Problem is, we have strikers who can't strike, except maybe striking a f*****g pose, midfielders who can't create, and now the defence has gone tits up

don't know if my first post got through but anyway, Ashley was given a tie so got back into the Boardroom at half time. he was telling the Scunthorpe Directors that their entire wage bill is less than "f.....g" Shearer wanted to be a manager in the Championship. He also said that he wished he could tell the fans what Keegan was really like. Ashley was quite affable actually but what I really hated was that you would have thought we had won 6 0 tonight, the way he was after the game.

What does that mean? FAG? FANG? FROG?

started the garden shed one off a few times in the Grove Wharf like.

Really can't be arsed to anaylse the game in too much depth, but again its the sorry story of fuck all creativity and poor finishing.  The only time we looked a real threat down the left was when Jose came bombing forward.

Special thanks to the insane taxi driver who drove in all the wrong lanes, cut about 10 cars up to get us back to the station for the 22.10 train back to Doncaster.

Also   at all the chumps from British Transport Police who were obviously expecting a mass crowd of rowdy fans, when only about 30 of us turned up.

The reason for the downturn is pretty obvious, all the way through the campaign we've been average in attack and excellent in defence but with our current make shift back line, which compensates a lot of height, physicality and natural defensive awareness we're prone to leaking more than we're scoring. We really need our 2 main CB's back so we can have that consistency there again.

Spot on, we're never likely to score many goals with our terrible midfield and impotent strikeforce... keeping clean sheets is absolutely essential for us. Without Taylor and Colo we are up s*** creek.

Despite how shit we were last night I still thought we were slightly unlucky to get beat. Didn't have the best view of far end but Murphy looked to have made two cracking saves, one from Nolan and one from Carroll, and after the equaliser we were looking the likelier side to win it. But we are totally shit and agree Scunthorpe played the better football. Only Enrique looks anything like a player. I think Nolan's a terrible player but he's the only one we have who has an effort on goal, or even gets into position to have an effort. Carroll is dire and why Ranger is sat on the bench, despite not looking full of goals himself, is beyond me. When we actually try to attack we look a lot better than Plan A which seems to be hoofing it up front.

Credit to Scunthorpe thought they looked quite tidy, front two worked well together and thought left back was excellent.

Williams (the left back) is constantly watched by Premiership scouts. If he stopped partying so much he might get somewhere.

We created enough chances to win easy, the wrong starting 11 and only 1 sub made in enough time were major issues, 2 RB's as CB's and one of them thinnks he's fkn Pele.

Khiz is a CB, as shite as he is in that position.

Due to the complete shoddiness of an inept, fat clueless owner, we were forced to field a right back at centre half, a centre midfielder up top and a 96 year old Cameroonian in the middle of the park and I am convinced that a dead shopping trolley without its wheels would beat the latter in a race.

They talks some shite like.  The majority of that was down to the decisions made by Hughton.

I believe the bloke writing was suggesting it was the 'fat clueless owner' who was at fault due to a lack of squad investment, in terms of getting in cover for positions, thus meaning those selections were nigh forced on the manager.

That's how I read it, and I have no leaning to either side.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion - our paper thin squad is down to 1 person and that is not Hughton

They weren't though. He chose to play Nolan up front (ahead of the three other centre forwards he had on the bench). He also chose to play Geremi in central midfield & Guthrie on the wing again despite the fact Geremi just doesn't have the legs for a central role.

If he'd played Kadar at centre half (who I know hasn't been anything special at all), he'd also be playing a specialist centre half at centre half, which would let him play his right back at right back instead of out of position in the middle, this would then let the right winger he's playing at full back play on the right wing, which would let the central midfielder he's playing on the right wing play in the middle of the park where he can influence the game.

All decisions that Hughton fucked up last night & the main reason we got beat.

Sir as I stated, I neither concurr nor disagree with the man I was just explaining how I read his article, and the connotations of his statement.

I agree - I don't rate Hughton at all as a manager.

I had to do it by early doors so be fair! Ha!
