Chris Hughton: I had to beg Newcastle owner Mike Ashley to take Sol Campbell gamble

Newcastle boss Chris Hughton had to persuade owner Mike Ashley to gamble on Sol Campbell, rather than sign a younger player.

‘You know it’s shorter term but it fits your need,’ he said.

Meanwhile, Championship newcomers Leeds want Newcastle striker Nile Ranger on loan to cover for injured Billy Paynter.

Classic example of a total bollocks headline. Where's the quote saying he had to beg? Wouldn't it make more sense to publish that?

If we wanted to  be really petty could we do the Daily Mail over that headline that claims he had to beg? Or 'cause it's not in quotation marks they can get away with it? I really hate newspapers, and most media in general. Utter twats.

Lets be fair, even if it was true its hardly a bid deal.

The club has a blueprint for they type of players we bring in, Campbell isnt just borderline he is way off the chart so I would see it as a good sign the board level actually cares.

Whilst Hughton should have complete control, the powers that be certainly has the right to check the with the manager to see if he is sure.

I'd question whether bringing Campbell in rather than a young up and coming talent would be the right decision. Hughton however knows Campbell very well, knows what he brings to the table etc..

Nothing article trying to stir up a storm in a tea cup.

I think the policy is against signing older players for large fees, where they'd have no re-sale value at the end of their contracts and the fee couldn't be recouped. As Campbell is on a free, it doesn't really apply.

Sol Campbell starting to shape up for Newcastle

Newcastle boss Chris Hughton backed Sol Campbell despite recent pictures appearing to show his new signing had put on weight.

Campbell , just back from honeymoon, sat out Newcastle's 2-2 draw with PSV Eindhoven yesterday.

But Hughton said: 'Having seen Sol since he joined us, he's in good shape.'

They must literally have nothing better to do.

Campbell has deliberately now signed for two clubs late to miss large portions of the slog-a-thon that is pre-season, he was chuckling about this when he was on Goals On Sunday.

Of course the press are going to write about NUFCs major signing of the summer being out shape.
