I know for me, the derbies against Sunderland are massive and the rivalry is great, but I can't even think of a Sunderland supporter that I know. Where I've lived Sunderland don't get any press and 99.9 percent of people support Arsenal, Manchester United, or Chelsea. Ay, as for me, obviously not surrounded by them, Liverpool/Manu is much worse over here. Crazy like, and talk about single minded supporters I have some Liverpool friends, and some of them cant just admit that some of their players are crap, like Lucas, Babel etc. (there are some good fans too, by all means) I dont not like Sunderland at all, (just a nothing club like Villa, Hull...) i feel it would be a little cliché just to hate them because i just have to, i feel more hate to other clubs. I think only the locals can develop a real hate for them, I guess it would change for me if i lived over there. On the other hand, i love the tension and i like the derbies, and i do feel its some of the most special and important matches each year, but the word hate is a little wrong. Its also the reason i dislike Vålerenga in Norway, its local rivalry, and when i am surrounded by so many of those abnormalities daily, i just go nuts. For all the absolute pain they inflicted on us (i.e. loads better than us) in the PL - I am suprised.
