Simpson wants to make move permanent

No way would he sign for us unless he was given assurances about first team football. He'd never join as back up.

I think for a young player, unproven in the premiership, that would be a bit cheeky TBH.

Not that it will be an issue, we won't buy anyone else.

I'd get him for a premiership campaign next year, he's alright. Shit teams in the premiership ultimately don't live or die by whether their full backs are amazing or not, he'd be plenty adequate and it would leave us to concentrate on the woeful midfield.

It's not as if he doesn't have potential either. I'd be happy to have him as first-choice right-back next season. I'm not expecting much in the transfer market - none of us should be. It's going to be bargain basement for as long as Mike's here; and Simpson is young, free, already here and English (sell-on value). He could actually turn into a really good right-back with a bit of tuition.

I'd imagine it'll be him and Ryan Taylor. I personally don't think we'll lose many players over the coming two transfer windows, and in terms of those incoming, i think it'll be similar to the window just gone. Couplea freebies, couplea cheap unknowns/past-its, couplea loans.

Assuming we go up, this is. If we don't get promoted this season it'll pretty much be the end of us cos all the remaining 'decent' players will fuck off in an instant. Colo, Taylor, Enrique, Guthrie, Carroll... they're not gonna sit in the Championship for two years.

Do people really think we will be going on a spending spree in the summer? If we do sign him I doubt it will be as back up next season.

I hoestly think, if we go up, we'll re-sign Habib Beye.

Because his attitude in preseason deserves a second chance?

I didn't say I wanted to, I just think there's a good chance we will.

I never said you did, was questioning why we would take him back

This.

He has pace, and is a half-decent defender. If things stay as they are, that's pretty much all we'd need from a fullback as a newly promoted side next season with the sole aim of Premiership survival.

Regarding his potential, it's always a difficult thing to consider, but more so in Simpson's case. On the one hand, the fact that Fergie, one of the best managers in modern times at spotting potential, isn't remotely interested in a pacey, half-decent, youngish fullback from his own ranks as a successor to Gary Neville, does suggest that Simpson hasn't got much room for improvement. On the other, it might just be that Simpson does have room for improvement, but there's no room for him because Fergie has put his faith in Rafael, who is the better "footballing" fullback at this point in time (which may be more important in the CL/top levels/etc).

Either way, I'd like us to put some faith in youth and find out for ourselves. At the very least, what we have right now is good enough for the immediate future, since we know better than others how easy it is to do alot worse.

Because he's a good defender?

when was his ability being disputed? You dont think his attitude during pre season could have soured any return for him? He was the only player to visably show his desire to get away by petty squabbles on the pitch and strops while leaving it. Even Bassong put in a half shift when picked.

That's pretty much how I would look at this. Simpson is a long way from being the type of full back the better premier teams would go for as he's not pretty cautious going forwards ( compare him to Enrique for example). But I really like him because he's a good defender, relatively mobile and has a great attitude. Like Danny Guthrie, he might not pull up any trees but he's a quality young squad player who will be good value for money. Great signing IMO.

You asked 'why would we take him back?'

That's the only reason I can think of.

Good news that someone wants to stay, but I really dont get a good feeling about him. Im basing this on little more than the fact that I know people who've met him who've said he's an absolute grade A prick. We don't have a good track record with pricks.

We had a better track record than we do now. Played champions league football with the likes of Dyer, Bramble and Bellamy in the team.

Out of interest, does anyone know how good a full-back Hughton was? I can't say i have an awful lot of faith in him to provide excellent tuition, to say our raw strikers like Carroll, or our best young midfielders... but you'd think - with right-back being his specialist position - he'd have something to offer Simpson. But like i say, dunno if he was any good in his day.

Solid if unspectacular right back...was part of a perennial weak Spuds defence..had they been strnger at the back, with the talent in midfield and up front, they may have won more than just FA Cups and the UEFA Cup.
