LiquidAK
Has to be Luque. Owen at least made SOME contribution, and in spots actually looked like a good purchase. Luque looked like a waste from almost day one.

Segun Oluwaniyi
Luque. Not all his fault, but he cost us alot, did nothing for us, and we retrieved no money in return for him. It's no contest.
Superior Acuña
Owen. He's obviously a decent player, and had quite a good goal/game ratio here, but £16mil, £100 000 a week for loads of injuries, culminating in relegation. I loved Duncan Ferguson. And didn't Emre only cost £3.5mil?
Cajun
£3.8m to be pedantic.
Guest labrowski
Someone start another thread called "the good players we never signed from the north east that would have resulted in us not wasting money!"
LooneyToonArmy
Luque has to take the crown. Although Silvio Maric deserves a place on the list ahead of Viana. I thought about Maric, was he pricey like? no, 3.5m
Incognito
What about Andreas Andersson!!

Newcastle Fan
Luque but to be fair he wasn't given a proper chance with the team..
alpal78
I define waste as being given the opportunity but not doing enough relative to price tage + salary. Result = Owen by a country mile.
Guest
Alan Smith is a very good shout. £6m and probably £50k a week for a defensive Championship midfielder? Wow.
Delima
Owen, Michael - 2005 £16M, 70app 26g Ferguson, Duncan - 1998 £7M, 30app 8g Luque, Albert - 2005 £9.5M, 21app 1g Boumsong, Jean-Alain - 2005 £8M, 47app 0g Marcelino, Elena - 1999 £6.7M, 17app 0g Objectively, Michael Owen contributes significantly more, pound by pound, compared to Duncan Ferguson or Albert Luque. And in football finance £16M in 2005 probably equals to £7M in 1998. Duncan Ferguson contributes more than Elena Marcelino. In conclusion, Elena Marcelino is the biggest waste of money. NG32
What about Andreas Andersson!! Awesome, this man could have the ball at his feet in front of goal, fall over, ball hits his head rolls back over hits his heel then goes in the net. The blonde bomber rocked. Guest
Hardly scored for us, but managed goals at Anfield, Stamford Bridge & Old Trafford. We can't say that about many of our strikers.
LiquidAK
Alan Smith is a very good shout. £6m and probably £50k a week for a defensive Championship midfielder? Wow. No it isn't at all, no where NEAR being the biggest waste of money, especially considering he's doing alright now. Yeah we overpaid and still are paying him too much, but nothing compared to Luque and Owen as far as being a waste goes.
Guest
Smith literally offered nothing for two years. If he'd contributed last season, we mightn't be where we are now.
LiquidAK
However he's still making a contribution now, Luque never did. Plus he cost less, plus I'm willing to bet he's on a lower wage.
Guest
He's making a contribution now because he's found his level...which isn't as a £6m £50k a week footballer. I'm sure all of the players on that list would have contributed at this level.
