The 58-year-old is expected to fill the void left by Richard Money earlier in the season after the former Walsall boss returned to his old club Luton Town in their bid to bring back league football to Kenilworth Road. Since Money’s departure in October, senior Academy coach Joe Joyce has overlooked the club’s youth system, with Kenny Wharton managing the Magpies’ Under-18 side in the Premier Academy League (North). United’s young guns are still in the FA Youth Cup too, and face a fourth-round tie away to Reading next month. However, Donachie is likely to be given the nod to nurture United’s young guns and look to unearth more teenage talent such as Haris Vuckic and Nile Ranger who are classed as success stories in the eyes of the current regime at St James’. A United insider told the Chronicle: “It’s been a case of watch this space at the Academy. “But Willie Donachie is a renowned figure in the world of coaching who has plenty of experience in bringing the best out of the younger players.” Donachie spent 12 years as a player at Manchester City and made a total of 351 appearances for the the Maine Road outfit. He also represented Portland Timbers, Burnley, Norwich and Oldham Athletic before retiring in 1990. And it was at Boundary Park, under the guidance of the Latics’ legendary boss Joe Royle, that he became noticed on the coaching ladder after helping deliver Premier League football and taking Oldham to a League Cup final and a famous FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United. Stints at Everton, as assistant to Royle, Sheffield United and then Manchester City followed, with Donachie working alongside Kevin Keegan at Eastlands. Donachie has since worked at Ipswich Town and Millwall where he left in 2007 after a spell as manager at the New Den. I had a few mates in the academy at the time and they told me it was all changing for the better when Roeder came in, things were improving untill he left the position and it all went to pot. He scored one of the funniest own goals I've ever seen against Wales in 1978,past a bemused Jim Blyth,who was making his debut for Scotland.Needless to say,he's a bit of a hate figure here in Coventry,because Blyth is/was a bit of a local hero.
