Glazers overseeing the destruction of Man U.

Ferguson's going to regret jumping into bed with the Glazers.

Did he have any say in it?

He could've said something against it. Not come out with stuff like "the Glazers have been fantastic for the club" and slagging the anti Glazer fans off,  he's still protecting them by claiming he has money to spend when he clearly doesn't.

Same goes for Bobby Charlton, their wages are more important than their respect for the club it seems.

Well, he could have slagged them off, then walked out on them/get sacked and let the fans do the rest...

It worries me to think how Barry Moat was going to finance buying Newcastle. Borrowing money from US backers wasn't it? I'd rather Ashley owns us than some company who would buy us and then puts the debt against the club.

I think that he'd claimed to have some mysterious US backer(s) who would only reveal themselves once the takeover had completed.  In hindsight, I expect that his backer(s) were probably a bank willing to loan him enough cash to buy the club in the same way the Glazers bought Man Utd.

Exactly! Terrifying prospect. Even the porn baron and his mate who've bought into West Ham only own a controlling 50% stake of it and are looking for other investors for the other 50%. As I understand it, West Ham still owe £105m!

Boro were first when they signed Fabrizio Ravanelli.  He had no interest in joining them but Juve had accepted their offer, he said he'd join if they paid him £40,000 per week, a wage that at that time was at least £10000 higher than anyone else was earning (even Man Utd had a £30000 p/w wage cap at that time).  He knew that a club like Boro were in no position to pay any player that amount of money so he assumed that he'd never have to join them.  Unfortunately for him, Boro said yes and agreed to his wages.

True, we did pay Shearer a lot of money, but Ravanelli was the catalyst for the mid 90's wage boom.

That's right and Juninho after that...Juninho was on massive money.

In recent history I believe Chelsea took it ot another level with players on 135k a week. Insanity.

The first batch of galacticos were all on 6,000,000€ net (twice that amount in gross earnings until the Beckham Law). That's for each of Ronaldo, Zidane, Raúl and Figo (he had this funny clause were had always to be the highest paid in the squad, Florentino loved it - NOT). That was the big break to stratospheric salaries, we followed suit with Ronaldinho and Eto'o at 5,000,000 net (it increased later on)... Nowadays people like Messi and Ibrahimovic are at 9,000,000 but that's not as high as it looks due to our tax breaks. Cristiano Ronaldo is at 13,000,000 net.

I don't remember much about wages in the 1990s, I know it started to go out of control from 1996 onwards. We signed Ronaldo, Madrid got Mijatovic... Valencia started to overspend in the late 90s and early 2000s to get to our level (their team was actually assembled on the cheap, but they had to spend a lot to keep people like Ayala from going to Real for example)

Oh, I remember when they signed Mendieta after we gave up on him due to the financials... Honestly, FC Barcelona outdone in the transfer market by fucking Middlesbrough.

On the plus side, Mendieta was an absolute sack of shit and sat on those astronomical wages for as long as he could manage. Dodged a bullet tbh.

He had been pretty good for us on loan the season before. Plus we ended getting Quaresma instead who was hardly better (admittedly more promising at the time).

Time for a salary cap across europe, the players have to take some responsibilty and have to realise they cant keep milking the game for all its worth.  They need to help stabalise their own profession.

Yeah, right it's the players' fault.

I said help stabalise their own profession. Numb Skull.

I never suggested it was all their fault.

Its a problem for the game as a whole between the clubs and the players.

Maybe if the players didn;t have such stupid wage demands then clubs wouldn;t have gone out and nearly bust themselves trying to compete with other clubs.

Their is a collective resonsibilty here.

bell.

Like someone said on here the other day, Ashley's cost cutting could be a blessing in disguise.

It was me! It could be a case of last club standing the way football finances are going. Singing "Get out of our club" is all well and good but who is the realistic alternative? I'd rather Ashley was stuck with us having to protect his asset than have a load of borrowed money used to buy the club and be debt ridden. I can't see a Man City or Chelsea type takeover. The alternative to that seems to be shady people with no money (like Portsmouth have) or Hedge Funds. A local business / fan buy in (rather than total buy out) seems about the only option.

Yes, you have a point - some weeks ago I said Football was heading for financial problems and this is now starting to emerge...

The only problem with Ashley is that he didn't PLAN to do things this way - if it works out to Newcastle's advantage it will be because he got lucky - as he has in the past, SOMETIMES.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a Salary Cap emerge - the EU bend lots of rules when it suits - just watch what happens with Greece's financial problems.......

some, myself included , think he did try to do it this way but gambled on not getting relegated.

Indeed, a gamble which failed badly but in hindsight may of helped out the club in terms of getting rid of high earners who werent happy picking up their wages in the fizzy pop league but would of been more than happy to pick them up whilst we struggled at the lower end of the table had we stayed up.

Lets just hope he doesnt gamble on us going up.

There has to be a salary cap.

I blame Jimmy Hill. And not just for this... for ALL of life's ills.
