At some point Hughton is going to have to make a decision whether it's justifialbe to carry a passenger for 90 mins in the hope that he will score a goal.

...is the problem in a nutshell. I'm hoping Barton will solve it for him.

Barton's return will be welcomed with open arms TBF. Even if some people don't rate him on here, he's still better than Butt and more productive than Nolan.

IF (and that's a big if) Barton had been fit for the first half of the season, i reckon he would have got a similar amount of goals as Nolan and more assists.

Good performance on the whole by his new signings. The addition of pace and width really made a difference and brought out the best in the players already here as well. Hughton's transfer dealings have been impressive on a tight budget on this evidence.

Im reluctant to let one result point to anything, but if anything this result points more towards just how wrong Hughton's been setting out more than him getting it right tbh. Fair play we played the right way tonight, but if Smith and Butt were available we all know one of them would have played.

He possibly knows it but needs to play the likes of Smith to keep his value up to sell him in the summer. Butt is gone imo regardless. Also now has really been his only chance to play others with a proper right winger in the squad.

This was Roederesque with his hand being forced over the selections.

Be interesting to see if Smith and Butt walk straight back in... which they probably will.

Good observation. That Spurs match away we should have been doomed. Huntington, Ramage and Pattison played that day and yet we had a lot more fluidity when we had the ball.

Don't you think Hughton deserves some credit for bringing in some players with pace to move us forward from here though? I would say that the addition of Routledge on the right has given us a whole new dimension. It took balls to play all six of his new signings as well, injuries or not.

also, judging by the score the side didnt look like a bunch of strangers. assimilating half a side into a starting eleven usually takes a while so he mustve done something right on the training ground to get them to gel.

At the moment yes. But if he perseveres with playing Smith/Nolan/Butt with Guthrie forced out wide then absolutely not.
