Mike Williamson (now managing MK Dons)

No matter who is best between Williamson and Taylor, Williamson and Coloccini is so amazingly good together that you should´brake that. was listening to a football program and they hit the head at the nail. "when the center pairing is good, the whole team plays good". Why the hell should we break that pairing ???

Said it before - a CB pairing is more than the sum of it's parts.

If the two complement eachother it is that discussion that is key. The individual talents are a post script IMO. Cole looks better with Williamson beside hime and vice versa.

In general and in particular the last two games they've been excellent.

I went to the Birmingham match last week and thought Colo and Williamson had good games.

Williamson dealt well with Zigic and has no fear when he has to put his body on the line while Colo made sure Martins was kept quiet.

Taylor will have to work hard to disturb the current setup.

People prefer Williamson because they 'swallowed the club's story about Taylor's wage saga' - I've heard it all now

I can't see many holding that opinion, and as someone who prefers Williamson it's got nothing to do with Taylor's contract.

So you're denying that there was significant dissent on this forum towards Taylor while the contract thing dragged on? You're denying that coloured people's opinions of him, despite him barely putting a foot wrong when fit last season?

Yep, heard it all now...

Got to be said, Taylor's had 6 seasons in the PL. The fact you're pointing to half a season in The Championship as proof of his quality says it all.

Ultimately, both Taylor and Williamson are lower-end PL defenders. The players around them on the pitch have lots of quality and consistency, so replacing one or both is not a major priority at this moment.

Says a man who insisted not so long ago that Taylor would and should come in for Williamson when fit.

What's your point?

Until Williamson gives Pardew a reason to drop him with a bad performance or a suspension, then there is no way Taylor should be brought back in at the moment. Leaving Williamson in the side will keep him confident and should at the same time give Taylor an incentive to get himself fit and motivated. Competition is essential and Williamson will know he has to perform.

I have been quite suprised with the amount of anti-Taylor views on here actually, even after his contract dispute. I have always quite liked him and would have thought about putting him in at right back alongside Willicini at one time but in recent weeks I think Danny Simpson has arguably been our best player, definitely the most improved anyway.

Fwiw, it might be worth noting the times Colloccini has gone out of his way to praise him as a partner (and vice versa) compared to Taylor.

Probably says a lot more than a 100 pages of forum discussion.

STEVE Harper has hailed the pillar of Newcastle United’s defence – Mike Williamson.

Harper and his defensive team-mates take on Bolton Wanderers on Saturday looking to take another huge stride towards Premier League safety.

Newcastle have kept clean sheets in their past two games, most recently beating Birmingham City 2-0 at St Andrew’s to move to 35 points.

And goalkeeper Harper has paid particular tribute to Mike Williamsom, who is enjoying an outstanding first season in the Premier League alongside Fabricio Coloccini.

“They’ve been fantastic, and Mike Williamson in particular has been great,” said Harper.

“I’m not one for singling out people after two fantastic team performances, but Mike’s been great.

“He had to deal with Christopher Samba at Blackburn from set-pieces, and did well, and then Nikola Zigic.

“There aren’t too many people that Zigic gives a few inches away too, but he had to with Mike. He did well, but it was a fantastic team performance.”

taylor hasn't had a chance really this season to build a partnership with colo though, it can take time for a partnership to develop at cb which willicinni has had colo-taylor not so much

That's exactly what I've tried to point out. Williamson is crucial against physical teams and areal attackers like Zigic. No way Taylor would have won the same amount of headers as Williamson did against Bham.

Were you at Bolton, or at the home game against Blackburn?

You cannot drag the Bolton game and the home game againts Burn into this discussion. First of all, everybody was had a shitty performance against Bolton. Second, our midfield against them consisted of Guthrie and Smith for pete's sake. And Guthrie had just returned from injury. You could put Terry in our defense and he would have struggled big time with that midfield who offered no protection at all.

The game home against Burn was first and foremost lost due to  errors made by Jonas and Tiote. Against Burn you got to focus on one thing: avoiding unnecessary free kicks and set pieces. Jonas conceded an utterly avoidable free in a decent position (the player stood far out with his back against goal). That again led to Tiote again giving the ball away to Gamst. That early goal transformed the whole game. We pressed like crazy for 80 minutes, and then Roberts scored because Colo sold himself like a cheap slut. Williamson could have done better on that occasion, but it was the first goal that ruined it for us.

I don't see how Williamson is crucial against physical teams, like. He's certainly physically inferior to Taylor.

Not in the air. Most physical teams like to play long balls.

Williamson may be tall, but he's not that great in the air, mainly down due to his lack of physical strength.
