It seems 50/50 with Sunderland fans. Some think he was average, others think he's their life blood.

Sunderland can be North East’s top dogs – Bruce

THE Black Cats can handle the pressure of being top dogs, insists Steve Bruce.

Sunderland will start the new season as favourites to finish above their newly-promoted rivals Newcastle – the first time they have gone into a Premier League campaign with that weight of expectation on their shoulders.

“It’s the first time in years that we have been favourites to finish above Newcastle, but we have to rise to that challenge and make sure that we do,” said Bruce.

“Probably on paper, we will be favourites and that brings its own pressures, but we can handle that.

“The derby games are huge and, like the fans, I can’t wait for them to come round.”

The term 'North Easts Top Dogs' makes me cringe. f***ing terrible.

Would it make you cringe more if the Mackems called it 'North East Top Cats'?

 be more apt as its only mackems that tend to use it.

Will this stop the inbred lot whittering on about us constantly? Whenever I go on RTG (which is about once in a blue moon) they have about 5-10 threads about us.

Proof, if more proof were needed, that finishing above us is all they care about.  They compare any success or failure to what we do.  As long as they're stuck in that mindset they'll never achieve anything.

In all honesty if they don't finish ahead of us this coming season its nothing short of disastrous for them and probably a sackable offence. They better hope he hasn't heaped any unnecessary pressure on himself with these comments.

Steve Bruce teams are always the same- probably start the season well, then go on a nightmare run where they dont win between November and March and then finish relatively strongly. Most predictable manager around.
