We need to start 'Hughton Bingo' with his catchphrases

You could do this with any player, chairman, manager, pundit or journalist in football though.

It's bullshit to criticise Hughton for what he's been saying. He's in a no-win situation.

Hughton is doing a very difficult job. He's been told not to talk about deals (probably on pain of death knowing Ashley), the club are extremely paranoid about the press and he's got to get on trying to placate the hacks, manage a football team and source potential signings on a budget of fuck all.

nothing is going to happen we have no targets because we have a bunch of inept muppets running our club. a group of chimps could run the club better, what club has a board room full of people who have never been involved with football in thier lives apart from ours

Man U, Liverpool, Villa .....

Then he gets sacked and we end up with another season of turmoil which guarantees our relegation, no thanks.  Pre-season was the time to tell Ashley he's an arsehole, we needs to just stick it out now the seasons going.

I thought the statement said only he 'the manager' could comment on team situations, including transfers?

Exactly, and no surprise that journos are having a go at him, the club has already stated they won't be giving anything away on transfers.

It said a lot of thing but it seems fairly obvious he's been told to say nowt. Just look at the Campbell deal and Ben Arfa saga.

That's understandable though. He's making their jobs harder so naturally they're gonna turn on him.

Yeah of course, I just mean we shouldn't necessarily go along with their criticism.

To be fair I don't take Bird's statement as a sign they're turning on him.

No but it does show a sense of frustration that they can't get any juicy information out of him.

True, but I get the feeling they know why. The press are fully aware of Ashley's tendency to ban/threaten journalists for the most innocuous of things.

Hughton's handling this exactly the way you'd want someone in his uncomfortable position to do.  Say very little outright, leave plenty of room for interpretation (or not), and don't allow your words to limit yourself unnecessarily.  It's all a game - and he's playing it well.

Remember how much everyone loved the fact that the Jonas signing and the Enrique signing, among others, came out of nowhere?  "That's the way business should be done etc" The only way that's accomplished is by keeping everything close to the vest, no matter how frustrating it is for fans to hear nothing in the meantime.

There would have been nothing on the Ben Arfa deal except for Dassier's mouth and Ben Arfa's lunacy.

Hughton is under no obligation to tell the press anything about transfer, but what he could do is learn some new words for "hopeful". Someone needs to give him a thesaurus.

Here's some new words for you Chris:

Optimisitic

Promising

Expectant

Hughton might not be any of those things though. He had his fingers burned with the Victor Moses deal which he was "optimistic" on and since then he has probably realised that a lot of our deals can fall through when it gets to Llambias. Especially when they are recognised quality prospects rather than Championship workhorses.
