Wenger? Won plenty with not much cash.

Not much cash? Naah. Net transfer spend? Sure. But they consistently spent shit-loads on wages, and as soon as Chelsea started spending he stopped winning stuff. The frugal years were between 2006 and 2013, when he won precisely zip, and even Spurs won a trophy. Then after that he - or the higher-ups - really did start to splash the cash.

There was a stat that Arsenal had spent the most money on their squad when Wenger won his first 2 league titles. But the 3rd, The Invincibles was the first of the PL era to win the league and not be one of the two teams spending the most money on their squad.

2006 to 2013 he kept them competitive although a couple of times they should've gone closer to the title based on the squad.

The last 3/4 years or so, he was clearly done. But he did a good job before that. Even when he was done he won FA Cups. Spurs could only dream of being such a great spent force.

We could only dream of spending the money they were spending, and we've been better over those years. Would be nice to win something though . Would also be nice if Man City and Chelsea fucked off, but there you go.

Aye you've been better but won nowt. I think the fact Arsene is undoubtedly a winner helped him win those. IIRC they beat teams better than them, that had also beat Spurs to win 2 finals.

That's the one thing with Poch and Klopp (he's won stuff but also lost an amazing amount of finals). If Jose had such competitive teams, he would've won a trophy by now with both clubs.

He wouldn’t have made Spurs or Liverpool that good though which is a major thing you’ve left out

Loved the Inter run aswell - that uber defensive performance in Barca was pure sex.

That whole Inter spell has an asterisk next to it anyway. I follow nerazzuri in Italy, and I’ve always had this resentment that Mourinho was in charge when they finally won the Serie A. The state Italian football was in at the time, Pardew might have won the scudetto with Inter...

Leffe absolutely loves mentioning that Spurs don’t spend any money whenever other big team’s finances are brought up

Yup - it's one of my key functions on here . There are a number of trigger phrases to which I am required to respond.

I reckon he wanted to sell Pogba in January, they realised they’d be taking a massive hit on his transfer fee, so they weighed it up against Jose’s pay off and thought it would be cheaper to do that instead.

The timing is strange. Like, why put a caretaker manager in for the majority of the season. Who’s in a job right now that wouldn’t jump ship? Do they not need to try and ensure a top 4 finish?

Why would they go to the bother of appointing a caretaker when Carrick could just do it and there's probably as much chance of him being decent than Solskjaer

Yeap, I'm wondering this as well.

He never seemed happy with their buys.  Yes they spent daft money as stupid as it sounds other than Matic how many were his first choices?  Watching them play their midfield doesn't work too many 6 footers who just run and tackle a bit.  No finesse trying to remember his Chelsea midfield did he have a playmaker alongside makelele and lampards?

How much have they had to pay him?

£18m. :anguish:

No wonder he was smiling on his way out of his sordid little grief hole

Living like some bloody tramp in a lay-by

Have you got your big plate, José?

Quite incredible that such a horrendous, painful, embarrassing period included them winning two of the competitions they featured in last season. How the other half live, eh.

Certainly not denying that this season has been disastrous by their standards, by the way. As everyone has said, he's been outdone tactically by more progressive and modern managers, and he's just never really seemed like a good fit for that club. Meanwhile the character traits for which he's been famed aren't useful or entertaining any more; he used to be cocky and would ruffle feathers with it, now he just seems constantly bitter and clinging to previous achievements that he's never going to replicate.

I was sick of him ages ago but still kinda hold a bit of hope for him in England. It would be interesting to see him build something with more typical resources at a club that doesn't expect immediate success. I'd even take him here in some circumstances; say if Rafa had moved on but we had new owners who wanted to build the club around a particular vision.

Hopefully he isn't finished but hopefully it's the last we see of him for a while.
