Thing is we didn't have a center of excellence or whatever it's called till two years ago. Italy and France have world class set ups to bring the right knowledge and skill to the players and have had them in place for a decade or more. Every kid in Holland grows up learing to play the system the national side and Ajax play, they start at 12 or summink...Germany's preperation is second to none.

Doesn't seem to be doing France much good.

Their squad is coming to the end of a very good 10 year cycle. It will be replenished as new talent steps up.

It's the new players who are underperforming, tbh.

Well they reached the final in 2006 and won it in 1998. They are now going through a period of replacing Viera, Henry, Zidane, Thuram, Barthez etc...It will take a few years till the new team takes shape.

Argentina don't have a centre of excellence like Holland, Italy or France do and yet have managed to produce Higuain, Messi, Aguero, Tevez etc. all in the same generation.  Same with Brazil and Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho.  I don't think a centre of excellence is the biggest problem.

Or take a look at the 2002 Argentina team: full of good, technically adept players but were absolutely shite, or Spain teams going back years and years. It's most a mental issue, imo. I don't think the German teams of the past have necessarily been better players, but clearly had greater mental strength.

Have to agree with this, France will rise up again.  If anything, they're a team lacking in confidence and the youngster need time to develop together like the previous generation.  There's also a few of the older lot hanging on, Anelka, Henry etc, which won't allow the others to feel free and express themselves.

England really does need a shake-up from the grassroots.  People have identified the lack of technique driven training as a problem for years, but due to the PL's overwhelming monetary success there's no drive to change anything from within the FA.  All about the mullah.

Aye Jurgen Klinsmann was saying Germans really enjoy pressure situations whereas it's obvious we crumble like a piece of paper...though obviously with our players being spoiled play boys they don't even try hard enough to choke anyway.

Anelka to Domenech after the Mexico game: "Va te faire enculer, sale fils de pute!"

Or, in English, "Go screw yourself, you dirty son of a whore!"

Half-time, apparently.

Precisely, theirs is a case of disharmony, not an example of the 'technique' argument being waffle.

Our lot lack the bottle to deal with the pressure of a WC, that is the biggest problem. All this waffle about poor technique is bollocks. Confidence and ability to handle pressure have crippled England teams for at least the last 12 years or so, and this lot are no different.

Oh, totally agree, it is in large part a metal issue, but having the other support structures in place help in small ways with that. The Germans are indeed a good example. At international level, England management really need to decide once and for all for better or worse how England is going to go about it, either play their natural game with players in their natural positions or a more composed and tactical European way. I still think deep down if even these players really understood and BELIEVED  in what Capello is trying to do then the results will come at the business end (qualifying is a different kettle of fish altogether).

A lot of it is down to luck (maybe not exactly the right word) as well.  England are still within the 6-8 teams who have a realistic chance of winning the WC.  Comparing France and England since 1990:

1990: England (SF), France (DNQ)

1994: England (DNQ), France (DNQ)

1998: England (Round of 16), France (Winner)

2002: England (QF), France (Groups)

2006: England (QF), France (Final)

2010: England (?), France (?)

With a bit of luck we would've win in 1990 maybe even 2002, these things happen.

All it takes is one bad game and there's another 4 years to wait.  We should still be glad we are one of 8(?) countries to win the WC.

What's the logic of putting up England flags with ABE on them?

Similar sort of logic as scrawling a swastika on an Israeli flag, really...

:undecided:

Or putting a skull on the Israeli flag ?

What?

As Bluf insinuated earlier the money machine that is the PL and all the huff and puff that goes with that, really doesn't breed players with a deeper understanding of the game. You could just take Rich's football brain and put it in our midfielders and we'd be unstoppable once they mastered trapping and passing like.
