gbandit Posted Wednesday at 11:51 Share Posted Wednesday at 11:51 Wonder how strong Emery’s loyalty is to Villa. Having to sell players and not be in CL football could mean it opens the door for other clubs to make a move for him. Think they’d fade quickly without Emery at the helm next season

Tsunami Posted Wednesday at 12:37 Share Posted Wednesday at 12:37 (edited) Fairs Cup: * UEFA don’t list it as it was a FIFA organised competition. * UEFA took it over as it was overshadowing The Cup Winners Cup and had better sides in it. * Don Revie commented that it was almost as hard to win as The European Cup as only League winners entered the top competition whereas the strong leagues each had several teams in The Fairs Cup. * UEFA kept the 1 club 1 city rule until 1976 (?) when Everton complained that they’d again missed out to Liverpool. Don’t let anyone try and belittle it, it was a really big deal. Ujpest Dozsa were serious contenders in The European Cup in the next few years, pretty sure they got to the SF. We were firm underdogs to beat them. Given we were 2 down in the final at HT in the return leg it’s even more remarkable that we beat them. Novocastrian Posted Wednesday at 12:45 Share Posted Wednesday at 12:45 When you look at some of the teams Cup Winners Cup winners had to beat you can clearly see the Fairs Cup was a much harder competition to win.

Kanj Posted Wednesday at 14:40 Share Posted Wednesday at 14:40 I reckon if the "Fairs Cup" was called something differently then it would be held in greater esteem now. The Youts don't know ball.

I know we would have certainly with Pope against Liverpool two years ago. I think Arsenal and Lehmann back in the 2006 CL final etc. I think going a goal down is far better than playing the majority of a match with ten men. It’s been said on here before but the uefa was harder to win than the champions league. There was a discussion on the recent Gallowgate shots pod about just making champions league winners only which will obviously never happen now, but it would be even weaker than when all the English teams used to win it as no ‘crack’ eastern Euro sides etc. some of the runs English teams had to win the cup in the 70’s/80’s look very kind by recent standards. ponsaelius Posted Wednesday at 15:24 Share Posted Wednesday at 15:24 (edited) The Fair Cup in 1969 was MUCH stronger than the current iteration of the Europa League. That really goes without saying given the teams that were qualifying for it in respect to their positions in the respective leagues, and the strength of those leagues at the time. It was probably marginally weaker than the early years of the UEFA Cup, by virtue of the 1 club per city rule, but really not by much. Tsunami Posted Wednesday at 17:11 Share Posted Wednesday at 17:11 UEFA carried on with the 1 club 1 city rule for the first 2 or 3 years (until Everton appealed). It was the same competition, with a different name, cup and governing body. UEFA wanted to wipe the previous version from history.
Benwell Lad Posted Wednesday at 22:44 Share Posted Wednesday at 22:44 Having watched most of our Fairs Cup games along with 59,999 others in SJP from under the tin shed of the loudest and most rowdy end the ground has ever had, seen Wyn Davies being brutalised by the Italian captain Fachetti when the ref wasn't looking but battled on and scored regardless, along with a whole batch of other never to be forgotten, legendary, historical NUFC moments, I would say it was one of the best times in the club's history and an amazing achievement.
