Shola Ameobi's goal was the 78th of his SJP career and the 42nd in the Premier League - the 41st arriving way back in December 2012 against QPR at the Leazes end.

This latest goal moved him up to fourth in the club's all-time Premier League goalscorers list:

1. Alan Shearer 148

2. Peter Beardsley 46

3. Andy Cole 43

4. Shola Ameobi 42

5. Les Ferdinand 41

Only took him 14 years to almost do what Cole managed in 18 months. Fair play.

Would dread to think what his stats are if you take away penalties too. If my memory isn't too shot, was it Beardsley taking them in Cole's day?

Laughable, that.

42 in ~290 games.

4 less than Beardsley, a second striker then midfielder who got 46 in ~130 games

1 less than Cole who got 42 in 58 games

1 more than Ferdinand who got 41 in 68 games

As a professional he's a joke, but the jokes on us and he's the only one laughing.

Can anyone name a 1 in 7ish striker that has managed to get to nearly 300 Premier League appearances?

Anichebe is shaping up nicely with 21 in 147, he was the first that sprung to mind. Not sure there's anyone on Shola's level.

I had no idea that Anichebe was that bad like.

Clearly not a good record... but how many of those are sub appearances?  That must skew the stats a fair bit.

EDIT - just seen this has been answered..
