Kevin Nolan

Remember a few people on here saying it wasn't that bad a tackle at the time, absolutely woeful challenge.

It was a woeful challenge, but there's no chance he meant to do that. His movement through the air was much slower than Anichebe's quick flick of a tackle, like intercepting an arrow with, well, Kevin Nolan. Still dangerous play and a red card, mind.

I don't think we'd be any worse off this season if Nolan was still at the club. You can talk about the likes of Cabaye being his replacement, but it's moreso Ba.

Agree. Especially as there's been many games when one of Tiote or Cabaye have been out or we had to play with Ba as a lone striker. Nolan behind Ba could have worked.

Think it's been the right thing to sell him, looking at the longer term, though.

In the same way that Nolan was looking to cash in on his best ever season, the club did the best thing by cashing in on him at his peak. He'll still get into double figures for West Ham this season and help them back into the Premiership.

We've used his squad place for another couple of players, good deals all around.

Absolutely. I was concerned when he left, mainly because i valued his place at the club as Captain more than anything else - and didn't think anyone would adequately step in. And whilst i said we'd be doing as well if he were still here, it's been a positive move for all parties, like you say.

I honestly think if he'd have stayed and wasn't getting a game he'd have been a bad influence around the place.

I'd agree but i think he'd still have played most games.

It's a bit of a pointless discussion, i know.

He was dreadful playing just off the striker though, he was too easy to pick up. Needed to be in CM with two strikers to occupy CB's.

I bet Tiote was glad he was sold.

His goals dried up once Carroll left

Still averaged more than Shola and Best this season mind.

So has Tim Howard tbf.

I was and still am over the moon he's gone, his goals were important and I'll never forget the Mackem hattrick but he limited our play so much.

We didn't play that bad football last season at times. Sometimes it was better than the football we've shown this season - last week against Blackburn the perfect example.

If Raylor's shot wasn't that lucky to go in we probably wouldn't even had won the game.

I'd rather have Tiote and Cabaye in central midfield which is now our first choice pairing.  Nolan was as much use as a statue as times when he wasn't scoring goals and that was most of the 2nd half of the season.

Would never disagree with that. Tiote and Cabaye are better than Nolan and Tiote were.

But it wasn't him alone that limited our play.

Shola averaged about a goal a game in the championship didn't he?...

1 in 2.

Still could have been useful at times.  i.e. instead of shola upfront along with best.

Our football last season under Hughton with Nolan the main man, was infinitely better than it has been this season. I actually disagree that he limited our game in the main because it worked basically. Its only when we tried to change our game itself (especially post Carroll) that Nolan's own game started to limit the one we were aiming to play. Ironicaly, a game that simply hasn't developed much without him. In fact he'd probably be quite effective just off Ba or even ahead of him the way we play today. He might not be as mobile as Best but he's a more clinical finisher, a better reader of the game and quite a presence physically too. That and his leadership qualities.

I'm not sure we would have done better with him, we've only lost Ba for a month and Nolan only scored 4 goals in the last 5 months of last season.  So even if he averaged that, he would have scored 1 goal in the month without Ba which is the same as Best has managed.  He probably would have offered slightly more mobility than Shola, Lovenkrands could also do that though.

Ok, pretty sure it was a goal a game in starts. Either way comparing Nolan's goalscoring record in the championship to players in the Premiership doesn't really work. Jason Scotland scored a shedload down there and scored 1 in 32 appearances in the Premiership.

He could have been a body to throw on at certain times.  I agree with what your saying mostly.

Obviously midfield of Cabaye and Tiote is much better.
