He sounds like someone who came 2nd alot in competitions at school.

"Don't worry son, it's the taking part that counts."

Are you seriously asking why we want to win a trophy? Really? fuck me

having not won anything for so long that fact hangs round our neck like a millstone, winning something, even the league cup, would have a transformational effect on the way we see ourselves as a club, not just the perennial underachievers who always fall at the last hurdle. no more 'you've never won f*** all" (sic) chants. not to mention entry into europe.

madness to turn your nose up at that.

Did Boro winning the LC transform how you see them as a club?

Far too much is made of our trophyless streak. If it’s become a millstone round our neck it’s because we’ve let the media blow it out of all proportion. There’s not many clubs in the UK that have won more than NUFC and the club is about a whole lot more than trophies in cabinets. If it wasn’t we’d have crumbled away to nothing over the last four decades. We’ve stayed united because NUFC is underpinned by a sense of pride in who we are, because there’s a relationship between the city and NUFC very few clubs enjoy. Other supporters sing you’ve never won fuck all because they envy what we do have, and that’s something that can’t be bought.

Winning the League is an achievement to be proud of. Winning the FA Cup still carries a modicum of prestige, but the LC has become a joke. Winning something would nice but it’s not the be all and end all. Being desperate to win anything just for the sake of winning something is a very sad way of thinking about NUFC.

If the LC comes our way so be it. There’s some money to be made, but anyone who thinks it’s worth winning for any other reason should ask themselves what that reason is.

we're not boro. they were just a small club that got lucky one year and its the pinnacle of their existence. we are a huge club who've never really built on the promise of recent decades so to finally lift some silverware would be a sign of finally beginning to realise our potential.

of course it is worth winning, no it's not the greatest cup there is and obviously i'd prefer we broke our winless streak with something more prestigious but just look at the winners in recent years. it would also get us into europe, generate some money and interest and forever banish the idea that nufc have never won anything and aren't the sort of club to seriously compete for trophies, even if such a belief is wrong it still exists and gnaws away at the club. can't understand this attitude of turning your nose up at a proper trophy.

tbh winning away at chelsea is an achievement in itself, to go on in this competition and rack up a series of straight wins to lift the trophy shouldn't be sneered at. we'll do incredibly well to get that far, something we've not done in recent years. fuck, even going to the final would be a day for everyone to remember.

Yup. Surely any cup, against reputed and credible opposition becomes a credible trophy? Seems to be a case of not being able to back down from an argument to me. Have a word man.

Winning away against Chelsea reserves. The LC isn’t about which club has the best team, it’s about who has the most motivated reserves. When we visit Stamford Bridge in the league we’ll see who has the best team. Enjoyable as it was last night’s result was a hollow victory, in much the same way lifting the LC would be a hollow triumph.

You don't want NUFC to be playing in Europe then? You keep avoiding that fact.

If were good enough to play in Europe we’ll finish the season in a qualifying position.

Malandro, does winning this poll mean that much to you like?

Once again, does qualifying for Europe (and the cash and recognition that would give us) mean nothing to you? Or maybe you would class that as too much of a third rate competition to compete in for you? I mean, teams like Liverpool, Man City, Leverkusen, CSKA Moscow, Villareal, Sevilla, PSG and Porto are all proper wank.

Winning the League Cup is a qualifying position you dolt.

Winning the League Cup is a qualifying position you dolt.

It might result in being given a place in the Europe Cup, but beating a handful of lower league sides and Arsenal reserves is in no way the same as proving your worth over 38 games against the country’s best first teams.

The attendance for our last home tie in the UEFA Cup was 28,000. So all those going on about how highly we value playing in this competition might want to note that the facts don’t back up their position. They might also want to think about why Man City took a reserve side to Russia(?), not exactly the actions of club hell bent on winning stuff is it?

I'm guessing he is just taking the mick?

No NUFC fan in their right mind would not be ecstatic if we won the cup.

He's clearly not an NUFC fan though, mind.

If this thread is anything to go by the it would be easy to conclude the next generation of NUFC fans are nothing more than a bunch of shallow pricks. Thankfully (and despite what they might think) this board isn’t representative of real football supporters.
