Interesting read.

 

The most obvious tactical element was Newcastles crazily high defensive line, combined with little pressure on the Manchester City man with the ball. This meant City had a fairly simple approach of hitting balls over the defence for the forward three players to run onto. Both James Milner and Gareth Barry got free on the left hand side in this fashion, and it was amazing that Chris Hughton didnt tell his defence to drop deeper early on.

 

Shola Ameobis hold-up play was disappointing, although he probably should have had a penalty when he was tripped by Lescott in the corner of the box.

 

 

 

One suspects that Newcastle’s approach of playing a high defensive line was the exact opposite to the optimum strategy against City – they rely on Tevez dropping deep and other players exploiting space in behind, so denying them that space seems to make more sense. Certainly, when Newcastle dropped deeper, City were less of a threat.

The high defensive line did seem risky though, didn't it... they could well have scored 2 or 3 when they broke in behind us.

 

In the end it worked, but it was relying on some impressive individual defending.

Haven't we played a high defensive line all season? I can remember people saying Waddle was going spacker mental about it during the Villa game. It seems to be working quite well at the moment , we've conceded few goals by allowing players in behind us.

Hughton and Calderwood seem to be spot on with the defensive side of things. It's mostly individual mistakes/moments of brilliance from the opposition and lapses of concentration that have cost us goals. It's going forward where our real problems are.

Our last two home games, espcially the one at home to Stone was dreadful.

 

COme on that was a massive 3 pts dropped.  More urgency please and drop Nolan.

Aye I think Blackpool was just one of those games, Stoke though was drab. Must get all 6 points from the next two home games. If we beat West Ham after Wigan then a draw against Sunderland would become an acceptable result.

I remember him going on about it during the pre season friendly with Rangers too!
