Unfortunately he had nothing to do with it, which says it all about the state of our club. Liverpool is all about Dalglish signing Carroll, Newcastle is all about Ashley selling Carroll. It still pisses me off that he came out to the fans and said Carroll wouldnt be going. Lying to the fans is asking for trouble. Iirc he said that he had been assured that Carroll was not leaving. He was only lying if he knew Carroll was going when he said that, I don't think he had a clue what was about to happen. Let's enter the real world now. He's ended up a patsy working for a couple of cowardly amateurs, much like all the others since Keegan. And now he knows it, bigtime. Basically they've hung the manager out to dry,again. It's the same pattern repeating itself. Reckon he'll find it extremely difficult. The media will be probing about all the reassurances he gave, and he'll have to be diplomatic to hang onto his job. He probably came into it thinking he could influence Ashley with some sound football knowledge and advice. but any authority he had at the club has now been completely undermined, which is the most damaging thing. Anything he says will not be trusted now, because noone believes that the clowns running the show have the best interest of the club at heart. It's all been starkly demonstated tonight in the contrast between how the professionals at Liverpool have gone about their business, compared to our completely shameful and embarrassing attempts at managing a transfer window in the best interests of the club. No doubt he'll be repeatedly asked "did you want to keep Andy Carroll?" and "what did Andy say to you about leaving for Liverpool?". I don't want to hear Pardew saying what a good job they've done in getting X to sign a new contract when it now obvious it means nothing. Taylor was going on a free so better get him signed up. Clubs showing an interest in Barton - better give him a longer contract - can't have him going for £1.5m and making a loss. Ben Afra - Liverpool interested - get the permanent deal done ASAP because he will instantly be worth more than double that amount paid etc. I thought Pardew might have a chance with supposedly being a "mate" but obviously it makes no difference. The only thing I would believe is if they came out and said Ashley lost a lot of money buying the club and he wants it back ASAP before he can sell up and make a profit. Mainly because the fact Liverpool had ridiculous money to spend so the fee was mental (we had already knocked back £20m+ from Spurs). Obviously if someone came in with an equally ridiculous fee for another player then we would probably do the same, but you could say that about most clubs. And maybe some of the contracts are to protect the players' values, but again, many contracts in football are signed for that reason.
