Having patience with our players

Lots of peeps wrote off Enrique, very few defended him (i did though ) now he's great!

Lots of peeps wrote off Colo, very few defended him (Ronaldo did though) now he's great!

Lots of peeps wrote off AC9, after Man City that time i thought (and many others) that he just didn't have it in him. Now he's great!

Simpson: Got better against better opposition. Go figure!

Barton, bit of both from all posters, his value is evident now, so much good goes through him.

So, maybe we need to have a bit more patience with players, maybe some need a year or two to really show some form.

Current black sheep are:

Guthrie: beefs up (body and mind), tries to impose himself, is there a player in there? I reckon there is. Needs to seriously grow some stones though. Time on his side. Possible.

Perch: Good athlete. Looking out of his depth. If he learns to read the game better then i reckon he's got the physical attributes to have a career at this level. Remember the slating Jose used to get? People had NO time for him. Maybe Perch can come good or at least better than he is currently.

Loverkrands: Too old to adapt for me.

Ranger: Needs to figure what he wants out of life. If it's football then he needs to make sure all his choices outside of football reflect that.

Smith: I think we're all agreed on this one.

Routledge: Difficult this one for me. Hasn't got a great 1st touch imo. Scared to take a chance often. He has a bit of a mental block at this level it seems. I reckon he's worth persisting with.

Jonas: I think he takes a lot of pressure of the team. I also think he'd benefit greatly from having HBA playing in the same side. Looks tired too.

So, who do you think it's worth keeping and trying to develop them?

It's not like José Enrique was a Spanish boy you found tending tables at the pub around the corner... Spanish international at all youth levels, he was in the fringes of our NT when you signed him...

Then why the funk is he not in the national team now!!

Didn't Villarreal replace him with Capdevilla after he left?

I do remember Enrique getting a load of schtick on here when he first came over to be honest.

I think we do give our players a hard time but the more I see other team's boards it's the same as our players get here.  Immediate knee-jerks after the match, a few hours/days later everyone levels off and talks a lot of sense and then it's back to the same cycle all over again depending on match-day.

Enrique was joked about tbh by quite a few.  Hence why the thread was renamed Joke Enrique.  Enrique was solid when he 1st came but he did shoot himself in the foot as his passing (short range) was pretty awful, thankfully he's improved that and his game massively.

And what do people expect? When people don't perform well (like Colo in that first season and Simpson last) they get rightly and truly criticised.

I doubt anyone is saying the same of Smith and Perch - shouldn't we wait to criticise them because they might turn out to be good?

Yes, they bought Capdevila from Depor.

Going abroad usually hurts your NT chances in Spain, unless you're aready established or play in a big team (sorry). The relegation didn't help either. He's off the radar for now but let's see what the next callups are. Capdevila is 33, Amorebieta seems to have chosen Venezuela, Arbeloa is average... I suppose Del Bosque will go for Monreal/Arbeloa for now but we'll see.

The vast majority on here always defended Enrique. Think it was just one person (otter?) behind that Enrique thread, and merely a handful who always criticised him. He was popular from the off. I remember louise taylor calling him "hapless" in our relegation season, something most found daft.

Colo got the respective praise and criticism he has deserved throughout his time here - no more, no less, imo. For instance in the opening stages of our relegation season people rated him, while still harbouring one or two doubts. He started struggling badly in the league and got a bit of stick, though it was never particularly stinging, more questioning his suitability for the premiership than arguing against innate ability. Thankfully he's adapted after a season in the championship and looks all the better for it (though he's still had 3 or 4 difficult games against the more physical strikers).

Carroll is the one who confounded the critics, though, me included.

Colo was shit in his 1st season. Andy Carroll was like a scud in the 1st half of last season. Barton has looked a lot better since he has move out to the right.

Show them patience the CUNTS got us relegated!!!!

Ashley, Kinnear, Wise got us relegated. Michael Owen, Duff, and Martins.

The criticism Coloccini got in the summer of '09 and during the first few weeks in The Championship was laughable, frankly. You had several folk wanting Kadar there instead of him, and one bright spark even wanted him on the bench behind Khizanishvili. He certainly got an absolute dog's abuse during and after the game with WBA.

I agree that players should be given more of a chance, and more shades of grey should be used in assessing them. Seems everyone's either class or shit sometimes, depending on their last performance.

I think Perch might turn out to be an acceptable reserve FB, and I still think Routledge is criticised too much and would be alright with confidence and a run of games.

Guthrie I don't know about, if he could improve his athleticism then possibly, but I don't know if he can.

You can argue about specific players all day, but the general message is 100% true. Players and managers/coaches are judged far too quickly in all sports. There is very little patience in sports (and life) these days. Young, developing players are expected to be superstars immediately even though history has shown us that sometimes it takes years for them to develop. Managers and coaches are expected to win immediately even though they might be dealing with a mess left by their predecessor.

There is more than just them, some players still at the club had shockers in the relegation season.

Oh really? Will that make him the first 'foreign' player to play for Athletic since Lizarazu? Infact isn't he more of a natural CB anyway?

It's a crying shame for Enrique if he can't get in ahead of that bunch tbh.
