Europe: would you take, er, 5th place right now?

Hmm, according to Wikipedia (yeah, I know):

If the winners have qualified for the Champions League, then the runners-up qualify for the Europa League. If the runners-up have already qualified for the Champions League or the Europa League, the highest placed team in the Premier League standings who have yet to qualify for the Champions League or Europa League would qualify for the Europa League.

Can't find anything on the FA's website to counter this.

I'm sure someone (may have been Nut) posted some FA documentation or other earlier in the season, and that basically said the opposite to that wiki article. I could be completely wrong mind.

Found this on UEFA's website:

If the winner of the domestic cup qualifies for the UEFA Champions League,

the domestic cup runner-up qualifies for the UEFA Europa League at the

stage initially reserved for the lowest ranking top domestic league 2

representative (or the winner of another official  domestic competition in

accordance with paragraph 2.03). Should both the winner and the runner-up

of the domestic cup qualify for the UEFA Champions League, the association

concerned may enter for the UEFA Europa League the club which finishes

the top domestic league immediately below the other club or clubs which

qualify for the UEFA Europa League. In both cases, the access stage initially

reserved for the domestic cup winner is reserved for the club which finishes

the domestic league in the highest position out of all the clubs which qualify

for the UEFA Europa League from the association concerned (see Annex Ia).

Each representative of the domestic league will then enter the competition at

the stage initially reserved for the  domestic league representative ranked

immediately above it.

To be fair, that sounds like you've got it right...

England have two domestic cups though? Or is that part for England and not Europe entirely? We only have one domestic cup in Norway, and the runner up there have stopped getting a spot in the EL if the winner already have a spot IIRC whereas it used to get one before.

Aye they'll change it if Chelsea win the ECL and they finish 5th.

Tell you what mind when i think back it's a disgrace Liverpool were allowed in the Champions League when they finished 5th

I didn't think about it as that controversial at the time, partly cos I still 'backed the English clubs in Europe'. However, looking back it was a fucking disgrace.

From asking about, the general consensus seems to be that League Cup runners up don't qualify for Europe, if they haven't already, but FA Cup runners up do. So if that is correct, we're dependent on there being two top five teams or Birmingham in the FA Cup final for the 6th place spot to be opened up.

Yeah Ipswich got in through the Fair Play League, didn't they? You can play in Europe even if you're in the Championship. Although, as long as you register yourself to do so? As that was Pompey's issue last season, was it not? I assume Brum aren't that stupid, though.
