Realistic Transfer Targets Summer 2011

What would people feel if we went for Carlos Vela in the summer? Haven't got all that of playing time for arsenal. And has been doing fairly well for WBA. Seems to do good in a poacher role, giving crosses, got a few tricks, and do know how to finnish. Might even improve alot with regular first time action.

Vela has looked a live wire when he has got on for WBA. He is not going to improve under Wegner at Arsenal. With Sweet Pea scoring for MUFC he will want to be a starter now. A max of £5 million though. We have enough players decent/good in the air in Best, Ranger & Shola & I would like to think Loven & another season at NUFC do not go together.

Aren't Feyenoord in a really poor financial position? Can we not raid them for some of their better players?

I think all the Dutch clubs are and we've got scouts around there :)

But Feyenoord are in a poor financial situation. They are now building their team around young domestic players.

Young striker Luc Castaignos has already signed a contract with Inter and will join them in the summer.

Georginio Wijnaldum looks interesting.

Depending on who goes down, I can see thefollowing:

Moses from Wigan.............2 million

Puncheon from Southampton..............2 million

Mendes from Denmark...............free

Larsson from Birmingham..............free

Elmander from Bolton................free

Ireland from Villa...........season long loan

and a couple of cheapish signings from the lower leagues

Out thedoor......................Campbell, Enrique, Barton, Kuqi and Routledge

Pardew will have Lua Lua, Kadar back in the squad, Ferguson and Tavernier as cover at full back. Airey, Inman and Richardson to go out on loan. Ben Arfa and Gosling back in the squad and considered by the owner to be like new signings.

Result..............about 15 million income, 4 million outgoings

AND 40 MILLION PLUS OFF THE CLUB DEBT.

Next season result.........................a long fight against relegation,

Also, I wonder if the 30 million Ashley got up front for Carroll has already gone off the debt or whether he has banked it. If the latter, I wonder how much interest will have accrued on that little lot by the end of August!

He can't just take money out of the club, just like when he blows a mill in the casino its not our money but his and he can do whatever he likes with it.

The money is there, in our account, we make the interest on it if there is anything left over after paying off the overdraft which stood at around £35m at the start of the season.

I'll be surprised and disappointed if Elmander goes to Newcastle to be honest, especially if we get into Europe.

Might not go to Newcastle, but he's definitely gone. He's been on the right wing since Sturridge came in as well. I imagine you'll try to get Sturridge again next season, as he himself has stated he would like that.

He's not specifically said he's leaving, but isn't signing a contract agreement with anyone until the summer. If we qualify for Europe, I guess he's more likely to sign a deal. He's consistently been linked with teams who will be in EL/CL next season though. I doubt we'll get Sturridge next season to be honest, though we're probably first in line if Chelsea's new manager (I presume it won't be Ancelotti) decides he's not in his plans.

Can't see any CL clubs wanting Elmander, not in any decent league anyway.

Being as impartial as possible I still think some players see Newcastle as a step above Bolton in some respects (and I'm not saying we are a better club).  I can't see Ben Arfa singing for Bolton, for example.

To be honest I couldn't see Ben Arfa signing for us either. But I see your point.

i had a look through the bassong thread- the consensus on here was pretty much that he was one of our most popular players (bit like tiote atm), and that he was far and away our player of the season, best signing in the league that year, comparisons to woodgate and so on.

funny how short people's memories can be.

No-one is disputing his ability, though. The reasoning behind not wanting him back is due to the negative effects it could potentially have on the team spirit, seeing as he was apparently one of those players who wanted out the summer we got relegated. Seeing as the 'senior pros' told those particular players not to come back to the club (I'm assuming this means Barton, Nolan, Smith, Harper etc), and also considering those players have all been integral either on the pitch or in the dressing room, it would be a pretty risky idea.

There isn't sufficient need to chance it and bring him back, imo. We can look elsewhere and hopefully unearth another gem.

I don't want him back, but to defend him a bit:

It was easier for players like Barton, Nolan, Coloccini, Enrique and Smith to stay and go down with Newcastle, as they were on huge wages, and would certainly not get a better contract anywhere else. Bassong on the other hand were on a fraction of what the others were on, despite being one of the best players for us that season. I can not see that we would offer him a new improved contract after relegation, so it's no surprise that he chose to walk. I don't blame him at all. Win win situation for all imo, as we got a good profit on him, and we managed without him with no problems at all, and still do.

18 goals in 87 appearances for Bolton, 8 of which came between August and November last year.

No thanks.
