9
I won't be happy with this ban until they prove it's not a one off. Once they start consistently adhering to the rules, rather than throwing a random 'you're banned to prove we still have power after we've pussied out of various other, more serious incidents' here and there. dont worry next game they will have a lip reader on Barton! Watching it back, i think the way he went mental for no reason was more worrying than what he said, did he forget where he was and think it was paparazzi??? JH
If he doesn't accept the ban, does that mean it'll delay his suspension...? No, his appeal would be heard before their next league game (i.e this week). If he loses his appeal though won't it be extended? Not necessarily. It depends on whether they felt there were 'grounds for appeal' or not. He still might accept it.
Guest Chubby Jason
There are surely no grounds for appeal when the charge is for "using foul and abusive language" or whatever it is. He shouted "FUCKIN WHAT??!" a foot away from the camera how can he refute that?

He shouted "FUCKIN WHAT??!" a foot away from the camera how can he refute that? Can see why there's some leeway in it (no doubt Rooney's representatives will cite other footballers being caught swearing/abusive swearing at the ref that has gone unpunished etc.) Can't see them accepting his appeal, but can't see them extending on the two games either. Guest Chubby Jason
The fact that it was directed towards the camera and his aggressive demeanor will count against him, the FA can easily argue that shouting at the camera is different to swearing on the pitch as he will have known full well that his language will be broadcast. Players swearing in the course of the game can always be distinguished because they can have no clue as to what the microphones will pick up. Although I am making the mistake here of expecting the FA to have logical reasoning to back up their decisions.
Dave
It's not like it was even just after putting the penalty away, or shouting it with his team-mates. They've nearly all finished celebrating and he starts giving the camera grief. What a moron.
Ronaldo
Damn right. The FA are partially to blame for this, though. Give someone an inch, repeatedly, and they'll eventually take a yard.

Guest Chubby Jason
It was embarrassing. He makes me more angry than any other footballer with this nonsense, why can't he just be happy with scoring his hat trick rather than behaving like an utter scumbag in front of the whole world (again). OzzieMandias
stupid, absolutely stupid. its shit like this, and things like booking players for taking their shirts off/going to celebrate with their own fans thats stripping the game of what little passion it has left. if you dont want to broadcast grown men swearing, dont point cameras at them when they're doing something highly emotional. This.
OzzieMandias
Good piece in Independent: "Sam Wallace: Rooney's response was perfectly understandable – the wits in the stand cannot have it both ways" http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/news-and-comment/sam-wallace-rooneys-response-was-perfectly-understandable-ndash-the-wits-in-the-stand-cannot-have-it-both-ways-2261452.html
Ronaldo
I'm sure it was a pure coincidence that Rooney happened to be staring down the camera lense when he made that lovely statement.
JH
But if Sky are going to thrust their camera into the face of a player just seconds after he has singlehandedly led his team back from two goals down, all the time being subjected to abuse about his family, would you not say that there is the chance that something a little ripe might be uttered into the oh-so-sensitive living rooms and saloon bars of the nation? Players are subject to abuse all of the time. They don't all react.
Ryan_Taylor
Have we worked out what he said yet? Not seen the incident. Deserves a ban for getting away with the blatant elbow vs Wigan anyway
BlueStar
http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11661_6853411,00.html United ponder Rooney appeal Manchester United and Wayne Rooney will risk getting an increased ban if they appeal against his charge for using offensive language. The Football Association charged the England star with using 'offensive, insulting and/or abusive language' after he swore into a television camera after completing his hat-trick in United's 4-2 win at West Ham on Saturday. Now the Old Trafford giants are considering their position and they have until 6pm on Tuesday to launch an appeal. As it stands Rooney will get a two-match ban which would see him miss the Premier League clash with Fulham and the FA Cup semi-final with Manchester City. Whilst not contesting the charge, United are thought to be keen on seeing the suspension reduced to one game. Under the FA's new fast-track rules, introduced at the start of this season, the case would be heard as soon as Wednesday and would be handled by an independent regulatory commission. However, they also have the power to extend the ban by another match, which would see Rooney miss the league match with Newcastle - but that appears to be a risk they are willing to take. Should Rooney appeal, then under the new rules he would also not be able to ask for a personal hearing or be represented before the commission

TRC
If Rooney doesn't play, it just means it will be Chicarito/Berba anyway so I'm not too bothered.

Rooney shouting into the camera does not get heard by fans abusing him in the ground. It gets heard by the people watching it on TV. Having said that, hopefully FIFA 12 will have a "shout a load of abuse into a TV camera" goal celebration.
AyeDubbleYoo
I thought Rooney was more reacting to the slagging he's had in the media than the fans at the game.

Skirge
It was less goal celebration more.. " Told you I am fkn great"... thousands of kids watch the games live on sky and do not need to witness that kind of thing, he should know better. YES to much is being made of it in the press & media that's always the way though, but the FA still need to ban him for it.

Thousands of kids go to watch football matches and here that sort of language and worse, lets face it, they probably hear those words walking down the street. Rooney should not have gone upto the camera and did what he did but everyone is making it out like it is some sort of war crime. tbh I have seen worse language on here (in which kids have access to and is available to the whole world). Espio
The FA have been investigating Wayne Rooney's foul-mouthed celebration at the weekend. He looked into a camera and shouted, "Fuck off! What? Fuck off!" They have found that he was just having an argument with his reflection.
