Gareth Bale is expected to be crowned the Professional Football Association’s Player of the Year at Sunday night’s award ceremony in London, capping a season in which the Tottenham Hotspur winger has emerged as one of Europe’s most exciting talents.

Jack Wilshere, of Arsenal, is the overwhelming favourite to win the young player award.

With the voting spread across a range of candidates, Bale’s inspiring Champions League performances have apparently prompted his peers to select the 21 year-old as their outstanding performer of the season.

He scored a hat-trick in the 4-3 defeat by Inter Milan at the San Siro and delivered a superb individual performance in the second leg at White Hart Lane, which Tottenham won 3-1. He has scored 12 goals this season but has not found the net since New Year’s Day, missing all of February with injury.

Every player in the Premier League gets to vote for their player of the season. With players unable to nominate a team-mate, this campaign has seen a remarkable spread of votes and the surprise omission of Manchester United winger Nani. For the past four seasons the award has been won by a United player (Cristiano Ronaldo twice, Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney).

The PFA representative of each club has to submit votes by the middle of March. Bale’s fine form in the first half of the season was decisive with many of his peers, putting him ahead of Nemanja Vidic, Samir Nasri, Carlos Tévez, Scott Parker, Charlie Adam and team-mate Rafael van der Vaart.

Bale's gonna win it on the back of two very good games v Inter.

Ridiculous, but then this award has next to no credibility anyway.
