Heck of a team that finished 7th

They did about as well as Chelsea did last year

The champions league winning year, or the Uefa cup winning year?

I'm massively confused about your comment tbh, although maybe I'm missing something?

Heard that Aspas fella has a gambling problem.

They did as well as Chelsea did in 2011-2012 when they finished below us. Their point totals are almost identical. They bought in a few good players and improved massively. I know people like to talk about the sheer amount of money Chelsea spent, but if you look at their first choice team only 2-3 players were different from the year before. Liverpool are in a transitional time and have a good base of talent. A few good purchases (they have the money) and they could easily challenge fourth.

But Chelsea won the Champions League, and you know what playing in Europe does to teams ;)

I don't have any issue with the big Ukrainian (Kiev/Donetsk/Dnipro) or Russian (Moscows/ZSP) clubs like, they've just as much right to be flashing the cash as we have. Massive clubs with huge support many of them, a lot of history too.

Read that post by Skärare, and thought of posting the exact same. Especially as the ukranian clubs might pay a bit over the value for South American players but their ambition is quite clear and they succeed in then selling them for more while Monaco, PSG buys above value and probably won't care if they're sold for half that price in two-three years time.

Eastern European clubs are just re-addressing the balance that the imbalance CL/major leagues have created, even if its dodgy oil money I am more sympathetic.

By the time 2018 rolls round I reckon the Russian league will make up a 'big 5' alongside the current traditional big 4.

Problems with the Russian league are plentiful though. Bad attendances, racism and very dull football.

True, but I think new stadiums and the general spotlight of the World Cup will help the first two, the last not so much. Dull football isn't going to do much harm in way of establishment as a 5th force on the European scene either. It might in terms of viewers but realistically no western Europe fan is going to be watching Russian league anyway.

Have to say I like what Liverpool are doing.

People seem down on the Kolo signing, but he's a solid experienced defender, who is definitely an upgrade on Carragher.

Aspas is another classy technical player to add to their ranks.

Not sure they'll miss Suarez that much if they get a boat load of cash to re-invest either, as Rodgers has been pretty solid in the transfer market.

Borini and Allen at £26m would say otherwise. Not sure Sahin was that good a signing either.

So basically, the signings of Sturridge and Coutinho have been solid.

Not bad after spending £50m

The fact remains the team is improving and they're still forking out the money, so whether they have spent £50 million is hardly relevant, as they can clearly afford to.

Borini has been injured for the most part, and it was only his first season. Allen has hardly been rubbish either, and I would imagine will only get better with improved players around him i.e. not Downing and Henderson, who will soon see much less playing time.

It's going to suck seeing Liverpool begin to improve, but they definitely will, and quite considerably I think.
