SEMTEX
"No players from Scotland or N Ireland in Olympic squad" "There will be no Scottish or Northern Irish players in the men's British Olympic football squad when it is announced on Monday. BBC Scotland has learned that manager Stuart Pearce will list 18 players from England and Wales."
ponsaelius
Interesting but hardly surprising. The only potential ones would be overrage players like Brunt/McGregor/Evans and there is better options. I think I read that James Forrest was likely to get selected if it wasn't for his injury.
Cajun
Ignorance time but why do most Koreans have double-barrelled surnames?
ponsaelius
They're ALL posh upper class.

On merit it's not particularly surprising, but I fully expected a few token players in there to make everyone interested in supporting this team. Would have thought Azza Hughes could have been the token N.I player. Aside from the GB games which will be interesting as a weirdness thing I'm quite looking forward to watching Brazil/Spain/Uruguay/Meh'hiho

oldtype
Ignorance time but why do most Koreans have double-barrelled surnames? Like the Turks, our first names are our surnames, our last names are our given names. So in reality, we all have double-barreled given names.
Jayson
Does anyone really care about how we do in this? Surely its best placed as a learning experience for the younger lads & Beckham could've passed on some advice. The likes of Giggs & Bellamy will only play the odd game anyway due to fitness & theyve little experience of international tournaments. Maybe ill care more when it starts dunno, bit meh atm at taking it so seriously.
Incognito
Bale's out already. Shouldn't that be in the Euro crisis/ politics thread?
Deuce
FWIW, Beckham had 15 assists in 26 games last season. And can still strike the free kick better than almost anyone: http://www.mlssoccer.com/matchcenter/2012-06-30-sj-v-la/highlights?videoID=190693 I know there's not much love for MLS in the UK, but don't let your thoughts on the league cloud your judgment of the player. Beckham is still playing at a very high level.

ponsaelius
Shame Danny Rose is there. Probably wouldn't have been if Bale hadn't got injured.
Jagten
Don't understand why he used one of his 3 over 23 picks on a RB.
ponsaelius
The other ones are rubbish?
aussiemag
Don't understand why he used one of his 3 over 23 picks on a RB. Completely agree
Jagten
Clyne? Walker? Unless he plans on playing him CB.
ponsaelius
Walker is injured. Clyne, fair enough.
Ashley17
Bertrand, Rose and Neil Taylor is left back overload. Bit odd.
ponsaelius
One major use of the over age slots is to plug weaknesses. Brazil are picking two CBs (THiago Silva and probably Luiz) because their under-23 options are rubbish. Clearly he thought RB was a weak position and we also needed a commanding defender at the back. One defender, one midfielder, one forward for the 3 over-age players. The logic is fine - the problem is that Pearce is a dullard who will have them playing hoofball. ponsaelius
Bertrand, Rose and Neil Taylor is left back overload. Bit odd. Rose is in as a wide option in place of Bale I'd imagine
Fenham Mag
Canny. Butland Richards Caulker Tomkins Bertrand Cleverly Allen Giggs Sinclair Sturridge Bellamy
Ashley17
I've no doubt he is but in an 18 man squad just take 2 of them. You've already got Bellamy, Sturridge, Sinclair and I suppose Giggs who are wide options
ponsaelius
I'd probably play Naylor over Bertrand.
