Disco
Who'd have thought throwing a trick and crossing would work? Magic (any decent LB would've snuffed it but at least he was willing to try)
Stu
Who'd have thought throwing a trick and crossing would work? Magic (any decent LB would've snuffed it but at least he was willing to try) even if he just uses his genuine pace, he did the same thing about three times before he finally set up Ba... I'm sure he saw plenty of Valencia in training, but it'd be really good if he tried pinging the ball in a la Antonio a couple of times, an earlier delivery would help keep the defence off balance

Major improvement that he was willing to actually to hoy the ball in the box y'day. Next step to do so with a more quality. Something definitely seemed to have clicked though although doing it against Enrique at Anfield will prove a little more troublesome I'd imagine. Parky
A little better. Wanted to start the shot off in the far corner but panicked a bit...Could have scored.
captainhaircut
He actually made a few good runs off his wing that was promising to see. With his pace, he could make really effective runs in behind a la Walcott.

JH
I love the 'they're s***' defence It was the same in the match thread yesterday for some that couldn't quite bring themselves to give the team a compliment. "A great win....against a s*** team" "We played well...against a very very poor Bolton" "Three valuable points....but they're going down"
Dr Venkman
Take your point JH but there surely it does have to be factored in that he's only looked remotely competent against rubbish full backs like Robinson and Givet? If he was having a stormer then fair enough, but they're making him look....ok, that's the problem. So far this season any full back half way decent has completely nullified him, we can't start the same guy in the same position every game hoping for the average quality of the full backs in the league to come down so we can get some success down the right flank
loki679
Pardew was also satisfied with the display of ex-Manchester United man Gabriel Obertan, who laid on his second assist of the season. The manager added: “Some our fans have been impatient with him. “I keep saying he is only a young player – even in his knowledge of the game. “Sometimes you want him to open his legs and do something a bit more exciting. “However, he had a great shot before we scored and had other moments. He was a threat to them.” Read More http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/newcastle-united/nufc-news/2011/12/27/alan-pardew-hoping-demba-ba-will-be-fit-for-liverpool-72703-30016019/#ixzz1hjo3CFIC The mystery of why Obertan keeps getting a game is solved. Pardew must have run out of players wives and girlfriends.

If he doesn't manage to beat him it will be because he is "fucking shit", it won't be because Enrique is brilliant. If you (not you personally) are going to take into account how how the opposing defender is, the same should apply to how good they are imo.

tmonkey
IMO that cross for Ba's goal is a prime example of bad wingplay. He was away down the right and had the perfect oppotunity to whip it in across the 6 yard box with either his first or second touch (so two opportunities), we had two players running into the box (Ben Arfa near post, Ba goalside of his marker at the back post) at this point so he should have put that ball in with the two of them open. Furthermore Ben Arfa then drops back, providing a perfect opportunity for a cut-back as he's unmarked (similar to the first goal) - so that's the third opportunity. Yet Obertan, on his own planet, slows down and waits for defenders to get into position whilst he does his stepovers. The fact that we scored is entirely down to a combination of Ba's prowess, Cahill being very slow to react to a ball he should have comfortably dealt with (possibly a slip or off balance), and probably a big slice of luck, as it looked deflected/took a strange bounce into the top corner. Fair comments tbh. He had so much space to run into and so much time to cross the ball, finding one of our men in the box was the least you'd expect of him. He did look a bit more direct when attacking yesterday though, and hopefully this goal will give him a bit more confidence. It's a shame we're playing against two of the best defences in the league next up.

Yeah that's a fair comment, he could of course earn himself time by looking decent over the course of the season so far against a varying degree of full backs, hasnt really done that though imo. Wullie
Surprised people thought he had a good game, I thought he was as poor as he's been at any point in the season, absolutely abysmal, the crowd in general around me were very unhappy with him too. I also agree with tmonkey that it was a much better finish than it was an assist, gave Ba more to do than he should have had. What the fuck do our wide players get coached given their reluctance to take a touch and whack it low into the box? Chelsea and Spurs in their game last week scored two of the simplest goals you can see, two quick wide players getting half a yard and simply putting it into a dangerous area and we never ever do it. Only example I can think of this season is Simpson's cross against Everton diverted in by Heitinga, which was the right idea but Tim Howard was about to throw his cap on it until his centre half poked it past him.
