We'll see when they're not "unproven" anymore, whatever the hell that means. Tired of it. I stand by what I said. Modric isn't untouchable. He's a fine playmaker with some specialist skills carrying his game. Needs possession to stand out. Also, literately can't wait for Santon to start playing and "prove" himself. He'll piss all over a player like Ekotto. And Marcelo is one of the best fullbacks out there. Aaaand Lennon ffs, are we defending HIM now as well? He's average. Take away his pace and you're left with very little.

I don't quite get the point that a player needs to play consistently in the premier league before we can assess how good they are. These players have played at many clubs before and some of them even in Champions League and we can't assess them? It's premised on the same shit that we should get overpriced English players instead of continental players because English players adapt better in the premier league. Anyone who has seen HBA play in France (domestic and national) would know that HBA is at least as good as Modric or VDV for that matter. Now of course if he is not fit, then that is another matter.

Sick of the "unproven in the Premier League"-thing. Who gives a fuck? I'm over the moon we spent £4.5m on the "unproven" French international Cabaye rather than £20m on the "proven" Henderson.

And fwiw, I rate Ben Arfa to be on the same level as the likes of Modric and VdV.

Some of the comments in the last 5 pages wouldn't look out of place on the SMB.  Embarrassing.

Spot on. This is absolutely embarrassing. Ben Arfa to the same level as Modric and VDV. Don't forget Ben Arfa isn't the best player in France and Modric would get into that team every day of the week.

NUFC have the capacities and players to beat The Spurs.

I'm not impressed by VdV or Modric and Adebayor golden age is behind him now.

Reading on my phone, but good posts by EliassenFredrik IMO. All this worrying over whether an outsider would perceive you as deluded or arrogant is way OTT/insecure. I'd have no reservations saying Marveaux is a better technical player than Lennon from the handful of games for instance and the years or watching Lennon's progression beyond a super athlete stall. And that's having seen Lennon for years. The only nauseating feeling from this thread is the obsequious reverence paid to a Spurs who we all but beat at home last season with an inferior side (had a rush of blood to the head not occurred!)

As I've posited in another thread before, I think the only way to break into any ostensibly 'closed-group' elite in the Premiership is to spike within the space of one, or maybe two, seasons - otherwise wealthier clubs will dissect the spine during transfer windows. This view we need to prove ourselves and build incrementally for five steady years or anything like that is absurd in modern day football IMO. There's nowt wrong with backing us to challenge with the likes of Spurs. Of course, as long as you don't say you're certain we'll smash them etc, you won't invite comments over arrogance but you should be able to have confidence in your team and be able to say so.

The biggest different between the teams (beside the sizes of the squads) is the fullbacks. Spurs are way better there. Otherwise it´s quite evenly, even if I think they are little better attacking wise, while we maybe are a little bit better defensive.

All a bit negative if you ask me! If the crowd really back us up I think we will have enough to take this one or at least get a draw.

Tottenham do have a couple of players who are better than the best we have (Bale/Modric). They have been performing CONSISTENTLY for a couple of seasons now, you can't deny that. BUT, we are a team in the ascendency and I don't think we have quite hit top gear yet... Hopefully that may happen next Sunday!!!

My heart says a nerve jangling 2-1, my head says a hard fought 1-1

We're more than capable of beating them buzza. No doubt about it, its more the fact that people have seen Marveaux play 2-3 games or watched it on the tube and he's already the next big thing. Barfa is better than Modric who is probably along with Silva the two best midfielders in the league.

This is all looking more like the SMB which is sad. Their comments of Colo or Cabaye never fitting into their side are equivalent to this of Barfa being better than Modric or Ba being as good as Adebayor who has been immense this season in his general play.

I for one think we have the capability to finish in the top 7 no doubt, but that is if the team stays fit and morale is as high now as when the bad times come. Its a fun group with loads of potential and I probably haven't been this excited since Sir Bobbys team, however there is no reasonable way to compare Modric to Cabaye or Barfa right now, he's a level above them and there's a reason Cabaye came here for peanuts (which might be the best deal of the summer in the whole world) and Modric had an offer of over £25million turned down. Not saying he's worth 5 times more, but he's a better player right now. We're not as good as Spurs on paper but hopefully come next sunday we'll be as good and better than them where it really matters.

Nail on the head. Adebayor is probably the best forward on either side as well but the full backs is where the real difference in quality will probably show.

We're more than capable of beating Spurs next week if we play our best 11 and they all perform, Spurs don't seem to like coming here for some reason.

It's cos they're soft shandy sipping southerners. :snod:

Last I heard, they can't even handle their ribena!! :)

Look, it boils down to personal judgment. Anyone has every right to say that HBA is on par with Modric without being labelled deluded as much as you have every right to say that Modric is the better player without being labelled a pessimist jerk. Its all subjective and no need to think that you are more right than others

Isn't Modric this player who refused to play twice - against Hearts in Europa league and Manchester United for the opening match this season - to force a move to Chelsea ?

Hummmm

I'm obviously taking the p*ss. van der Vaart is a fantastic footballer.

However he's a nightmare to try and accommodate out wide or in the middle of a 4-4-2, because he's fat, slow and a lazy t***. He's not the Spurs player I fear. Tioté shall look at him and explode his hamstring.

VDV has played 6 games for us wide right of a 4-4-2...

Twente (home) = 4-1 (win) = Vdv scores 1 goal.

Arsenal (away) = 3-2 (win) = VDV scores 1 goal

Aston Villa (home) = 2-1 (win) = VDV scores 2 goals

Wolves (home) = 3-1 (win) = VDV scores 1 goal

Arsenal (home) = 3-3 (draw) = VDV scores 2 goals

Arsenal (home) = 2-1 (win) = VDV scores 1 goal

So in the 6 games Van der vaart has played RM he's managed 8 goals, quite a few assist, we've won 5 of the 6 games and drawn 1. Yes he's certainly a nightmare.
