No, but the stadium will be referred to as 'Sports Direct Arena', on TV and in the media. That's my point, which you knew, of course.

but the people that matter will still call it SJP. unfortunatly the people that matter, if they want to wear the clubs colours have to advertise some other company.

I don't know what you're getting at. Do you just want an argument? Because I can't be arsed.

nope, just pointing out apparent double standards as i honestly can't see why one is seen as terrible and the other tolerated if not encouraged.

Why is it so surprising or illogical that stadium naming is worse than shirt sponsorship.

Shirt sponsorship is just placing a logo on a garment and essentially not changing it, and is done by every professional football club. The shirt colours and club colours do not change.

Stadium naming is changing the name of a 100+ year-old city icon to the name of one of the tackiest brands in existence. For me, it's a bit like renaming the Eiffel Tower to the McDonalds Tower.

of course the strip is changing, it's got words or a logo on it for cash. the name is for the most part something you say and for the most part won't be used. fwiw i haven't bought a current newcastle top for myself since advertising was placed on it.

Well we'll just have to agree to disagree, I just think the stadium renaming is much much worse. Selling a bit of advertising space is fundamentally different to selling your identity IMO.

I hope the name won't be used that much either, it would be great if that happened.

Something was put on the strips, the name of the club didnt change. Something was put on the stadium, the name of the stadium didn't change.

Now the name of the stadium has changed. Can you see the difference?

It's a bloody terrible analogy, you're comparing micro details to macro details.

I'm only 22 so I can't comment with much authority, but weren't shirt sponsorships derided as much as, if not more, than stadium ren-amings when they first came to the fore, as no one was used to that level of commercialism in football? For the majority of football fans, we've known nothing but shirt sponsorships, it's run of the mill.

For me, personally, the stadium renaming in itself isn't the problem. When we've got one of the tightest owners who will look to get any financial upshot he can, it doesn't surprise me. I'm not happy about it, but it doesn't surprise me. The only reason I'm against it is that obviously we're not going to get money from him for advertising his company, and I don't believe a word that they're going get true sponsorships that will pay for the privilege.

I'll be vehemently against shirt sponsorship, also, if Sports Direct gets splattered on the shirt, purely because it's another avenue of income gone from the club just so he can shove his shitheap of a company down the nation's throat just that little bit more.

it's more a question of being honest. the name change will actually have less effect than the shirt sponsorship. think match days. no-one outside the media will use the name, you don't say in the pub "what time are we going up to St James' park ?" but you can't help but notice the sponsorship on every single top. the only thing with the shirt sponsorship is that A) people have become accustomed to it, and B) we weren't the first major club to do it.

Aye.They weren't allowed to be worn when your team was on telly either (days prior to their being cameras at every ground and no live football other than the FA Cup final and European Cup Final).
