He's told a player is fit and it's up to him whether or not he wants to play them; he chose not to play Hatem because "his stats weren't right" (his words) and he believed that Ryan Taylor and Gabby Obertan would be more effective for us at the time. The Frenchman was slapped with the 49-day driving ban and a £5,100 fine for racing at speeds of 110.2mph in a 70mph zone without insurance on his Mercedes. Newcastle Magistrates Court heard that the 26-year-old sped past a police car on the A696 Wolsington Bypass dual carriageway in Newcastle on September 6 last year. After being pulled over he was found to have no insurance. He pleaded guilty to driving without insurance and one count of speeding via an interpreter. Chris Anderson, the prosecuting solicitor, said: “Just after 3.30 in the afternoon on September 6, a vehicle driven by Mr Ben Arfa overtook a police car. “The officer followed the vehicle and checked Mr Ben Arfa’s speed as 110.2mph over the distance of just over nine-tenths of a mile. “It turned out that Ben Arfa was not insured to drive this vehicle.” The court heart that after the offence, the vehicle was impounded and not driven again until the defendant had taken out an insurance policy. Miss Michelle Brown, defending barrister, said that Mr Ben Arfa, of Darras Road, Ponteland, could only apologise for the speeding offences. She said he believed his insurance was covered by a green card, which covers drivers in a foreign country for six months. “He was operating under the misinterpretation that his green card insurance covered him for use of his motor vehicle on this particular instance. “This is a young man who has got it wrong on this occasion, but has done everything he can to put right that error, that misunderstanding.” Sentencing him to the ban and fine, magistrate Yvonne Steane, said: “We feel that the speeding is so serious that you will be disqualified from driving for 49 days.” Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

I drive the way my parents brought me up. I love all speeds, in fact some of the slow speeds have been my best friends here in England. We all know there is a hell of a lot of rubbish that passes for transfer news in the press, but this has been reported across various different sources (including a BBC journo) for several months now. Players whose contract is up this summer: Simpson, Harper Players whose contract is up next summer: Perch, Gosling, Shola Players whose contract is up in 2015: Ben Arfa, Jonas, Ryan Taylor, Sammy, Tavernier He stands out a mile in that list so you would imagine that the club will want to talk about a new deal this summer. HBA is 26 years old and has the talent to play for almost any team. In a short career this is where he is at the top of his earning power. He will probably want to have a look at what else is available before commiting to us (even Keane took his time signing for Man United at about this age). His agent will also be thinking that stirring up some interest won't do any harm when he goes to the negotiating table - they'll be looking to get on to the really big money this time. Likewise the club may be reluctant to hand out a massive deal to someone who has spent so much time injured. They will want to know what sort of price other clubs will want to pay if they can't get him to sign for what they think he is worth. Other clubs are bound to have an interest in him, and they will be aware that he is on the point of entering the stage where he may be available at cut price. It's not hard to imagine that a club like Liverpool would be keeping an eye on him. The board will probably be interested to know what sort of figure clubs would be prepared to pay now, then if they think HBA is asking for too much they can decide whether or not to cash in rather than let his contract start ticking down and let an Enrique situation develop. There is bound to be some manoevering from all sides, and stories like this are going to keep on being fed to the press every so often until he actually signs a new deal. Imagine Ben Arfa in a liverpool shirt Ben Arfa in a liverpool shirt? His injuries mean we're having to imagine Ben Arfa in a Newcastle shirt. I'd be surprised in Liverpool wanted Ben Arfa mainly because he has only played about 38 games in 3 seasons (admittedly one of those seasons was down to his broken leg). The French forward was involved at the club's Little Benton training ground yesterday, allaying long-held fears that he would need an operation to cure a hamstring injury that has sidelined him for all but one game since December. Manager Alan Pardew admitted last month that he thought an operation was likely, which would have ruled out Ben Arfa for the rest of the season because of the nature of the injury – an old problem that had not cured properly. However, a period of rest appears to have resolved the issue and the 26-year-old is now expected to play a part in Newcastle's relegation battle. The France international has made only a brief cameo appearance in 2013, starting as a lone striker against Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala in the Europa League. He has not played in the Premier League this year and has been a significant miss during a hugely disappointing domestic campaign for the club. Newcastle are hovering above the relegation zone following a run of just two wins in their last six games and there has been consternation at the amount of time the player has missed because of the injury. He has been linked with a possible move to Liverpool as part of a swap deal with Andy Carroll, but the England forward's wages are significantly outside Newcastle's strict pay structure. The club also do not want to let Ben Arfa go and the player would only consider a switch if it was to a major European club who play regularly in the Champions' League. First they must hang on to their Premier League status. Pardew has admitted the forthcoming eight days present one of the biggest challenges of his time in charge at St James' Park – after today's game, Newcastle host Benfica in the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final on Thursday trailing 3-1 from the first leg, before the Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland next Sunday. The manager is unlikely to have his combative midfielder Cheick Tioté available today, as the player pulled out of training yesterday. That provided a further blow to a team who also be without captain Fabricio Coloccini, Ben Arfa, Massadio Haidara and Mathieu Debuchy.
