Watched Douglas on Saturday. Big, solid defender with decent mobility and plays it out from the back very well. Would like us to go for him. Can't believe we haven't heard more about clubs being in for him as his contract is up in the summer.

McClaren may dash the pursuit of Douglas

by Lee Ryder, Evening ChronicleJan 24 2012

NEWCASTLE United’s hopes of signing FC Twente defender Douglas Franco Teixeira could be dashed by Steve McClaren’s second coming at the Dutch club.

The Magpies saw an initial bid for Watford’s Adrian Mariappa turned down yesterday and were assessing their next move today from their Tenerife training camp.

We first revealed Newcastle’s interest in Douglas back on December 19 and, while United are monitoring the Brazilian defender’s situation, the Chronicle understands that the former England manager is digging his heels in to keep the 24-year-old in the Eredivisie, at the club where they won the title together in 2010.

McClaren – who tried to sign Douglas while at Wolfsburg – wants to keep the 6ft 4in defender and will continue to persuade him to stay.

McClaren returned to FC Twente on January 5, but took charge of his first game over the weekend, a 5-0 win against RKC Waalwijk.

Douglas’ contract runs out at the end of the campaign and he will be free to leave on a Bosman – which would provide Newcastle with the ideal opportunity to pounce for the Brazilian-born star who holds a Dutch passport.

McClaren has no money to spend at FC Twente and is already facing a battle to keep hold of star names.

Sources in Holland say the only feasible exit in the last few days of the window would be if “a significant cash bid” was waved in the face of chairman Joop Munsterman.

The acquisition of Mariappa would seem a more likely outcome but Watford turned down United’s first bid yesterday as it was deemed “unacceptable”.

The 25-year-old has 18 months left on his contract at Vicarage Road.
