Big business stinks. We know. It's not a new phenomenon. What Barclays and co. do behind closed doors is unjustifiable but these services are not directly marketed to the public. We're not advertising reckless investment banking or cluster bombs. Wonga are a payday loan company. That's their service, that's what we advertise. By getting into bed with them we further legitimise loan sharking.

If you can't understand why this may cause consternation for Cisse then you're beyond help I'm afraid.

How does that square with him gambling then ?.

Why can't he gamble with his own money? He's not set a roulette wheel up on Percy Street for f***s sake.

Against his religion, so he can cherry pick then ?. So if we were sponsored by a betting company who prey on people with addiction, what would he do then ?.

You can't have it both ways, you back him up yet overlook obvious contradictions. Fair enough for f***s sake.

There is such a thing as a moderate Muslim, yer kna?

like ben arfa, tiote etc who will play in a wonga top ?

Picking and choosing the rules they follow. Bimpy will go mental.

Miffed, not mental ;)

Do we even know that the reason that Cissé has not travelled to Portugal is because of this whole Wonga thing or is it all just hearsay and rumours?

David Craig was SSN saying it was because of the Wonga wangle.

I think they're all pretty dodgy, at least proper banks invest in businesses etc, why can't we be sponsored by something nice and fluffy and respectable

There's no such thing in modern society I'm afraid.

Did Cisse not play a week later than the other internationals? (Last game June 16)

Maybe it could be that?

Clutching at straws.

We could like, not be sponsored? How much are we making from Wonga, £10m max over how many years? That's nothing in the grand scheme of things when you think about TV money etc.

No, BBC and assorted papers banging on about it for a while tends to lend credence to it. Personally i'm not convinced.

And to be fair to me like, i was only answering your question with some news about it today.

After everything that's gone on under Ashley, it never fails to amaze me how people are able to propose that such widely reported negative things are just the media making things up for some unknown reason. They've happened time and time again. This is a club that just employed Joe Kinnear for the second time ffs. People said that wasn't true either.

Not having a sponsor would just about be fine logistically but as everything is governed by money these days, it is highly unlikely we'll see a NUFC strip sans sponsor.

It's 8M a year for the Wonga deal.

Quite a bit of cash, I would say.  If that's nothing in your book then  you must have 100's of Billions in the bank.

If the question over Wonga is a moral one rather than a religious one, then why is Cisse still the only member of the playing squad to object to wearing the shirt? Unless I've totally missed the point here, surely every NUFC player, Muslim or not, has a right to protest against advertising payday loan companies on the grounds that it can be seen to be exploitative rather than sacrilegious, and yet Cisse is out on his tod. Either Papiss is some sort of selfless humanitarian or he is simply using this whole debacle to further his own interests.

There is another option. Cisse is being used, some religous fuckwit offering him bad advice. Perhaps the least likely scenario though.  :undecided:

I think Cisse wearing a non-sponsored/charity sponsored shirt would only increase their exposure. Every time we play people who don't know are going to be questioning why he is wearing a different shirt etc..

I do struggle to believe this is a genuine reason for him not playing though. As logic said it could be outside influence, or it could be him wanting away but I really don't think HE is that bothered about Wonga. He certainly doesn't live the life of a devout Muslim from what has often been mentioned and I really find it difficult to believe this is the straw that broke the camels back.

Have to say, it's really weird that people are jumping to the conclusion that he has any other agenda than just not wanting to wear the shirt.

I'm not convinced myself that he isn't just using this as an excuse, but until I know better I'll go along with the official version that it is a religious objection. Which is why I would like to test that loyalty by a compromise where he doesn't have to wear the Wonga badge, but I can't see that happening. It would be nice to see what he would do if we agreed though, seeing as his spokesmen are saying he'd be happy to play without the sponsor's shirt. Call his bluff if you like.

The other worrying thing about this is the knock-on effects it may have on the other players. Cisse seems like quite a happy-go-lucky, friendly guy to me and those who've met him say the same. Generally he plays the game with a smile on his face. I can't imagine him being precluded from a pre-season training and team-building trip with the rest of the entire playing squad is something that they feel too cracking about, particularly considering he's our number one striker.

What would stop all the other players deciding they wanted a charity sponsor or non-sponsored shirt too? You can't have one rule for one and not the rest.

Was thinking this earlier, not exactly a great start to the trip all this.

All the club can do is perhaps agree a deal with Wonga whereby Cisse can play without the sponsor on his kits. And if he doesn't agree to that, then it'll be clear he's angling for a move away.

I think that's what Cisse has offered to do, seems the club and Wonga wont accept that at this stage.

It will increase their exposure if he refuses to wear it definitely, but not in a good way. It's bad publicity for them, especially when there's loan companies who aren't morally questionable (according to Cisse) like Virgin Money etc.
