Europa League 2012/13 - Benfica 1 - 2 Chelsea

Portuguese police advice talks about the possibility of refusing stadium entry based on breathalyser tests.

Not seen anything like that at any of Benfica's European games this season.

The Spartak Mosow fans were swigging bottles of vodka just outside the ground, some of them were totally ball bagged and they still got in although I saw one particularly inebriated Russian get hoyed out the Benfica end for being too lairy.

I didn't realise Benfica are unbeaten in the league and have scored in all their games this season bar the home/away fixtures against Barca. They've scored a lot, too.

Unless we significantly up our game the return fixture will be pointless. I'd maybe even advocate a similar tactic to the Anzhi games - stifle them away and try and sneak it at home. Aformentioned scoring record makes this a big task, however.

Tbh i wouldn't really take too much from the league record as Porto are unbeaten too

I'd like to look at their European record and while impressive isn't as daunting as their league record and there is a few results from inferior teams to ourselves ( at least IMO) i would be happy with.

That's what I did take heart from. The European record isn't invincible. Saying that, it includes Barcelona

These are a good team no doubt, but Celtic gave them a good game FFS. I'd probably say they're at a level akin to Arsenal, maybe Everton if they rest a few.

I'd say Celtic could beat us, tbh.

Stalybridge Celtic could atm.

Only because of our manager though. We have a better team than them without a doubt.

Crazy thing is, if we leave scoreless or 1-1 away, beat Fulham, our home tie will be pretty electric and its anyone's bet. Such is the rollercoaster that is our club

Naw Bimp!

Think of the ultra anguish on here and then we signed 5 players in a week, beat Villa and then beat Chelsea at home.

Well yes that was an unexpected upward curve.....ploughing downward like a out of control 747 now like

Nah, i'm liking the lack of positivity across the board though it usually means good things.

We lost to Spartak. They're the russian Sunderland (shit gets censored).

 Thanks, problem solved.

Yea, as I was saying, our european campaign this year been ok so far, but we had the responsibility to progress in that group. We are doing good in the Europa League (specially against Bayer, quality side), but we had to do better in the Champions League.

1W 1L against Spartak (Celtic won both)

1W 1D against Celtic (nicely done)

1L 1D against Barcelona (Celtic did better)

We needed to win at Camp Nou in order to progress and we lacked the composure to do it. Many missed chances.

Last year we had a way better run in CL. 1st in our group (Manchester University 3rd), eliminated Zenit and then gave Chelsea a run for their money in the quarters, while playing with 10 most of the game in London. Once again, missed way too many chances during both legs.

I believe we'll struggle to score against you, like we did against them. One of the best attacks against one of the best defenses. Should be interesting.

Scared of Benfica. Despite Bruno suggesting they are poor infront of goal, they seem to do a bloody good job of getting in front of it with the ball. We are the opposite of that.

Still, will be cracking game to watch but expect us to struggle to win. A win would be a brilliant give the way our league season has gone.

I would say we lacked some composure in crucial moments. Of course Barça and Chelsea aren't soft opposition but we threw away too many chances. And you defend with 10 men if needed so it won't be a walk in the park. :)

Btw, who's back for this game? Krul? Haidara? Tiote? Santon?

They reckon Tiote and Santon back. Saying that, our medical team seem to just guess nowadays

Without proper full-backs it'll be a struggle, your wide players are very good.

I wouldn't mind to repeat the same game result we did against Everton in 09  :snod:

The attendence will not be good i'm afraid, probably 35k.
